View Full Version : Do you take your camera EVERYWHERE?

I have wanted to take it to the store or other places but am worried about people giving me funky looks or snickering. People around here are very rude as it is, all I need is to add that to it...

I mean I've seen people post photos of inside a grocery store...I mean do you just whip out your camera when you want a photo of the cereal isle as you are shopping?!

I suggest you buy a sling pack for your dslr.
Not only does it make it look less noticeable, but it also protects from the elements!

You can get one for less than $20.
I have to say it's a good investment.

Not my SLR. They have their place but the grocery store isn't it. I have a P&S for the times I want to be a normal person.

I may not have it on me, but it is always close. Normally I keep it in my car throughout the day. If I need it then it only takes me a second or two to go get it.

As far as shooting in a grocery store, I know of at least two southern chains (Ingles & Winn Dixie) that forbid photography in their stores. Their concern is over corporate espionage, so they have a blanket policy in place.

I rarely take my SLR out unless it's a special event or something, but i always have either my camera phone or my point and shoot http://m08o1124znfu179.imageshacknow.info/img/2465/o09a0208gstn/POTNsmile.gif

I took some produce photos yesterday in the local Safeway store and the manager told me it was against their police and asked me to stop. I apologized, deleted the images and went on to the local coffee shop where I got a couple of interesting shots which I liked much better.

My Nikon 8700 comes with me just about everywhere because it fits in my coat pocket. My SLR equipment does not mainly because I'm not keen about dragging a 25 pound Slingshot around all day. It's freaking heavy.

Nearly. I carry around my 15" laptop, 40D, and maybe a couple lenses pretty much everywhere. My back hurts.

haha...awesome pic.

I carry my 5MP phone with me everywhere (the reason I got this phone was because of the camera) and I ordered an SD790...I try to take my DSLRs to as many places as possible, but since I drive a convertible with zip-out windows (Suzuki Sidekick), leaving it in the trunk is not an option, so if I decide to take my camera with me, it's an all-day commitment lol

And I got asked to leave the mall in Las Vegas for taking pictures of a makeup display at the MAC store. I was bored while the Mrs. was buying makeup. Don't take your camera to the store without asking.

I work for a University news paper and I always have my DSLR and the one the Paper issued me in a backpack and I carry my school books in a shoulder sling bag. You never know when your going to need it. If it comes down to the cameras or school books... Usually the cameras win.

Yes, I do. I have a Canon SD1100is that is with me constantly. BTW, if you want to get unwanted attention, take pictures of baked goods. There is an entire blog devoted to bad cakes and it is becoming infamous at bakeries. Really.

But for the most part, nobody cares. Take all the pictures you want.

I carry my 8X10 Deardorff in its attractive leather case on my belt.

I find that as a general rule having my camera with me makes it easier to take photographs so I keep it with me very often/usually.

It's a bitch, but some things are always with me--if not on me, then close enough to get it quickly. Walking cane, camera, knife, firearm--followed closely by knee brace, imodium and aspirin. Getting old is another bitch.

In 30 years of photography, the best potential pictures have always been when I didn't have a camera. Maybe there's a moral there?

I don't take mine with me as much as I use to cause I can't afford to get my stuff stolen or messed up but I tend to bring it with me often enough to run into some odd looks and questions. I often tell people I'm doing a report for class or something like that to put them at ease. Another thing is, if you do take it with you everywhere there can be perks. Grab a pack, make sure your setup looks big, battery grip strap your largest lens on, stick a flash on it and you can play the reporter at events and such. Go to the race track and tell them your partner has your pass and he's in the pits, tell nice girls your shooting for a website or mag etc.. I mean usually the only thing you risk is them saying no. If it works, you get some VIP shots and some memories.

You guys shouldn't keep your cameras in your car. I work with insurance claims and all-too-often do I hear sob stories of people who had their cars broken into and cameras stolen, among other electronics or valuble items. It's bad for everyone, the insurance company, the policy holder, and the police who have to respond to these calls!

I don't take my main (more expensive) cameras everywhere for obvious reasons. But a while back I purchased a factory refurb xTi solely for that purpose. If needed, it can produce a good picture, but if stolen, it's not a life-changing loss (I paid $259 for it).

It may not be real smart, but, I take my camera in my truck because I worry someone will break into my house while I'm gone. I've never been broken into before. I think I'm due.

I actually forgot to put my camera in my truck this morning when I went to work. I felt sick about it for a while. Out of everything I own, I worry about someone getting my camera the most. I don't know why. Ironically, I have had a truck stolen that was full of tools. It was at a motel over night. I never got my truck or my tools back.

Errr, I thought that was what insurance was for!

As long as I've got no decent pics on my cards, thieves are welcome to my gear. It's all insured new for old anywhere in NZ. I quite fancy a 5D mkII :D

The car holds a 4 year old Canon P/S which still works well - everyday as I go out the door to work I slip a G10 into a jacket pocket - and feel "prepared". What this truly means is NOTHING of photographic interest will occur during the next 10 hours! On vacation I will carry my DSLR until I have had my "fill" of taking enough pics. Then I will typically set aside a few hours to return to places of special photographic interest - alone - so I can dilly dally an hour on ONE spot if I am so inclined.

Its called an insurance policy, not an "I can be careless and get my insurance company (neighbors) to buy me new gear" policy.

That's why insurance costs so much more than it should. People use their insurance policy as an excuse to not take proper precautions against loss.

If I am at Uni, Coaching or just going out my camera always is near me. Today I was coming home from a local motorcycle race and there was a 4WD stuck on the Railway line. The Fire Brigade were helping him off the track. I snapped a few shots and was getting back into my car when our regional news paper drove up missing all the action. I sold three photos on the side of the road because they didnt make it in time.

The Journalist was very cool about it, I copied them from my card to their laptop. I only shoot in raw but that didnt stop them from paying $75 each for the shot they chose, add to that I have my first ever publishing. The Journo took all of my details for the credit and as a referance in case I can submit more work if I happen to be at the right place at the right time.

My camera is as well travelled as I am. We are nearly up to our four month aniversery.lol

I try to make it a habit of taking my dslr everywhere I go. Its normal to see many people walking around the city with a dslr. (Quite trendy I might add). I'm thinking of buying a nice compact p&s for quick snap shots.

And the lens you use for your throwaway camera?

First, if I made it sound like a "throw away camera" I did not intend to do so. It's a good camera and takes good pictures. You put an xTi or xSi in the hands of a talented photographer and they can produce excellent results.

As to your question, I had a Tamron 18-250 that was not being used any more. All of its focal lengths were replaced with L glass plus it does not work well on the FF bodies. I had a choice to sell it or let it rot in the closet. As it stands, the wide focal range works well for the purpose the xTi is intended for.

Yes, I usually always have my cameras and all but my super-telephotos with me. They usually stay locked up in the trunk of my car though, the super-telephotos stay at home. If I get a call to shot something on really short notice, I'm ready to go. I also have a G9 that goes with me almost everywhere... especially in places that I just don't want to carry an SLR camera around.

I didn't want to carry my 5D/30D around, since I wanted to keep them for shoots. SO, i decided I wanted an XTi.....ended up with a 1D Classic instead. So, the 1D comes with me about 90% time. Not the most discreet of cameras, but does the job.....I sometimes think I should sell it, and get the XTi, since it's a little bit more discreet, but we'll see.

I always take it, its a question of how you behave i guess, at first i was also abit unsecure and got the odd look or two, now i dont really pay attention to them mand go around my purpouse, i dont wanna miss a shot because i didnt take my cam, this shows i guess as ive been getting less odd looks and comments( though the occcasional smartass does come along) and people tend to give me more space and respect and try to scram out of my shot when im shooting (even though theyre nowhere near the frame so i smile, say its fine and get a smile back, sometimes even a convo starts about photography)
all in all for teh past 4 months ive had only good experiences with taking my cams with me

I have been since the 1st of Jan '09, I have taken more keepers since 1st of Jan this year than I have in all the previous (2004 » 2008) combined, if you want to improve yourself quickly, do it, it may take some time at the beginning to get used to the idea, in no time it should feel like 2nd nature and you wouldn't want to be anywhere without it :)

I take mine everywhere. I figured that if I was going to buy a camera and take photography seriously as a hobby, I should organize my life in a way to take it everywhere with me. So I now have a messenger bag where I carry my cameras and lenses, and I figured I might as well put other things in there like my MP3 player and a notebook / pens, film, and extra batteries. It's probably the most organized I've been in years.
