I currently have a Canon G2. Looking for a better all around camera.

Which would be better for me. I hate the delay in the G2!

The old Reble does away with the shutter lag, which is why I got it and got rid of my G2. The New Reble is a couple hundred more and probably worth it with the larger sensor and other upgrades. The only thing I didn't like about the old Reble, was the 3 sec. start up time when it goes to sleep, but someone one here pointed out leaving the sleep mode set to 30 minutes-which I never thought of- and now I don't have a problem with it.

I'd vote XT for improved high iso performance, aiservo, quicker burst rate, mirror lockup without hack, etc.

CactusClay, the new Rebel XT has the same sized sensor as the old rebel. At higher ISO the sensor has less noise.

I'd get the XT, it's got more features, it's faster to use, and it's technology's 2 years newer.

Tim, I thought the XT had a 8 megapixel sensor compared to the 6 megs on the old Rebel.

It has more pixels, but it's the same physical size - 21mm across or thereabouts. They just packed the pixels more tightly.

actually a little bit smaller, but higher resolution

Ok, Tim, I get ya. I meant to say more pixel, instead of larger sensor, my mistake. Ur keeping me on my toes.

You are correct it is 8mp. While a bit smaller than the rest of the SLR digitals, the XT is a good value for what it offers.

DrebXT gets my vote although it's relatively small for big hand.

As someone who has owned both, I'd say go for the Rebel XT. The extra features that the XT provides are definitely worth the extra money in my opinion.

I was within a gnats whisker of ordering an XT when I changed it to the 20D. I didn't even consider the 300D. The XT is superior in all ways and well worth the slight price bump. Always get the very best that you can afford and you will not be dissappointed.

I work at a camera store. The XT is defintially a better camera. Still plastic like the old one, but the plastic feels MUCH better, almost feels like metal. The only thing i dont like about it is that its really small, even with the battery grip

Surprised no one mentioned DIGIC II

I was in the same situation... Had a G2 for a few years and was getting comfortable with the manual functions of the camera. Then I discovered this forum and eventually got a Rebel XT. Can tell you that the Rebel XT is killer and absolutely enjoy it thus far.

But if you can get a 300D at a clearance price, I would jump on that and spend more on glass. This is the exact reason that I opted for the 350XT rather than the 20D.

Oh yeah and whatever camera you get, read the manual and www.photoworkshop.com did offer some help in learning the camera and its functions. And this forum rawks too!

Hope this helps.

Hi!

I am new here, just found the site and so far I am really hooked. Having said that, I am in a real quandry here!

I have held both the Rebel and the new XT. I like the 'feel' of the older one. I'm a newbie to digital photography and while I have read all the negatives about the older Rebel, would I person like me just starting really be able to perceive the 'noise' and so forth you guys talk about?

I have been able to see a few places that have the older Rebel at really low prices. I agree 100% with the spend more and get the better machine. Heck I just did that with my new laptop, but for starters would the older Rebel with a good cheap price be OK for a newbie like me? Or would the XT be the better choice?

The whole deal with my buying an SLR is the lens interchangeability. I guess the money saved could be used to buy better lenses. But, are the extra megapixels (and other features) really worth the extra money?

Finally the greatest negative I found on the new XT is the size. It is just too small! I like the feel of the older one.

Any suggestions?

Thanks ahead of time for any help...

joe

Go with the Rebel XT. I have the old Rebel and I like it. If I was to buy another one I would get the Rebel Xt. It is a great first digital camera. :)

Re noise: yes, you will definitely notice is. The lower noise at high ISO is a huge advantage of the XT, even if you don't know what that means right now, you will soon, and you'd be glad you got the XT.

I upgraded from the 300D to the 20D just before the XT came out, I had pre-release info so I knew what it would be, and i've not regretted the move for a minute. I'd so the same again right now. I only had the 300D for 3 months before I decided to upgrade, so if you think you might do the same, just go straight to the XT.

Joe, if it is your first digital SLR then go with the Older Rebel. Get what you like. If this isn't your first SLR then go with the XT. You will like some of the new features.

I have the older Rebel and I love it. I have two lenses a stock Canon 18-55 with a Sigma 70-300 along with the Battery Grip and a Speedlite 420 EX. ect, ect. You can go on and on.

Have fun. Anthony

Oh - another huge advantage of the XT - it's a LOT faster to use than the 300D.

Yeah definitely the XT. The small extra cost is worth the extra features.

I have both now and they're both great cameras, you won't go wrong either way. The XT though has a few more features that I missed in the 300d, so it's been great for me so far. If asked I'd recommend either, and I can now say I'd highly recommend the XT.
