#1....looks like you focused on his forehead instead of his eyes. Too bad, would have been a great shot!
#2...Would have like to see both eyes in focus. Also, not really loving the crop on that one.

Thank you so much I have some others I would like you to look at... This was really my first time ever doing any pics like this, let alone using flashes.. Can you please tell me how to properly focus so everything is in focus. I used 50mm 1.8

You may need to close the aperture a little so more things come into focus. And personally I think the flash is too strong, maybe try to decrease it a little.

You should change your focus setting to "center". I am guessing you are useing the multi-point focus setting. Once you make the change you will see much improved focus.

Here's my advice, (I'm not experienced enough yet to make suggestions,) Keep practicing, and posting here, and asking for suggestions, and you'll improve. Those photos, are not too far away from being super shots!
Best regards while we all strive to improve!

You have great subjects so just follow all the advice here and repost! Definitely need to learn about DOF and aperture settings and figure out why your focus is off (is it you, the camera, the lens, what?).

Thank you so much. I will keep posting and keep learning. Quick question if I use center focus should I focus on the left or right eye and how can I keep everything into focus......

Stopping down your aperture, #'s get higher, will decrease your depth-of-field, in turn will make "more" of your subject in focus, instead of just an eye, nose, etc. The 50 1.8 is great for DOP, but for portrait work, you really can do without the shallowness.
Good Luck!

Always focus on the closest eye. And when your using such a large aperture, try manually focusing. It doesn't take much to miss your focus with such a tight DOF. Try shooting at an ap of 4 or higher. You'll still get a soft background but won't need to be so critical on your focal point.
They look pretty nice though! Keep it up!!
