how do you strobists set up the flashes when shooting cars at night? i cant figure out how to get that ring of light around the car

You need to add a light behind the car for rim lighting similar to how you would for hair.

You could probably do them in the day then desaturate the surrounding areas of the car in post processing to make it look like night.
