According to this interesting article,

http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/articles/finalfour.aspx

Sports Illustrated use strobe lights mounted on the ceiling of stadiums for their NCAA coverage. More specifically, the Speedotron Black Line 105.

Since the ceiling is so far from the court, I'd imagine these strobe light are extremely powerful right? How much more powerful are these compared to professional strobes that would be used in a portrait shoot?

The 105 head is a 4800 WS bi-tube head. They are pretty cheap these days. Their are a bunch of different packs you can plug them into. How much actual out put depends on what pack it is plugged into.

edit

I just looked at the Speedotron website and they have a new 105 head out that is good for up to 9600ws from 4 packs.
