how are you exactly using it? Do you have samples of using the lightsphere II verse the catch-eye reflector on the 580ex?
Check out the lighting section about the Lightsphere II and Gary Fong, there are samples of pictures taken using the LGII. If your pictures has a harse light and harse shadows, than you might not be using it correctly.
In most cases, indoor situation, the LGII should have the dome off, and the open portion facing the ceiling.
If you are outdoor, with no ceiling, put on the dome, and face your flash/dome to the subject. It will now be a direct fill in light.
You can use it outdoor with out the dome, if you have a ceiling to bounce the light off with.
Make sure you are bouncing against a white wall, or else there will be color tint. Use the dome in direct flash if you can't find a white wall.
The dome also works in low ceiling situation, so if you only got about 3-4 ft from the tip of the LGII to the ceiling, put on the dome.
Hope this helps.

the biggest advantage over the white plastic thing is the size of the light source when shooting vertically. shooting horizontally i have seen no difference between it and the lumiquest or the omnibounce. shooting vertically, the 'sphere' is the same size. the lumiquest is pretty good vertically (with the white insert), but the omnibounce isn't.

yes, shooting in portrait orientation, you can't beat the LSII. I have posted a portrait shot in the "Gary Fong" thread.
