It says 100% Authentic Sandisk Compact Flash Memory Card. Also 30-day return policy. I have bought many items from ebay and so far I have not bought any fake ones. Of course you need to exercise your cautions.

Anything can say something like that. Personally, I wouldn't buy a memory card from ebay because it's so easy to be fake and it's evident that it happens a fair bit. Hopefully you've found a good one though.

Many and I'll say again many buyer has been scammed purchasing SanDisk memory cards on ebay. Often the buyer might not even realize he's been taken cause the card works for the time being and generally at much slower speed in the fake packaging.

I was scammed once on EBay for a supposed "genuine" CF card. You could put it next to a real one and not tell the difference. I had to send SanDisk the number off the side of the card to find out it was a phony. Now its only legit dealers for me. With the current SanDisk rebates I got an Extreme IV 8GB card for $94 and there is a $60 rebate so it was only $5 more than the EBay one with a lot more peace of mind

I don't worry about it since it can be returned in 30 days. The seller is not someone who only sells a few items on ebay. Grab it while there are still available. This can not be any better price.

i bought 3 x 8GB cards for $20 after rebate on black friday. I received the $70 rebate already :D
i would be cautious, even avoid, buying memory card on ebay. Too many fakes out there.
as for the "100%" authentic.......almost all ebay sellers (even fake sellers), will put that on. So it's no guarantee.

That's a heck of deal for you. Anyway, I have 30 days to get refund if it is found a fake one. All you need to do is to call Sandisk and give them the serial number to verify. This seller has sold tons of the CF cards on ebay and I doubt they are fake ones but I could be wrong.

I don't know if it is a fake. But, it is an older version of the current 8gb CF. The new version is labelled differently and says 30mb/s on the front label. It is faster than the one you have. The new version came out well over 6 months ago. You should call Sandisk about the serial number to find out if it is a fake.

I only ever bought one "genuine" SanDisk memory card off ebay. 4 gig ultra SD for $15 a few years back if memory serves me right. Worked good for the first few days, then it started to corrupt every picture I took.... The ones purchased from newegg, etc don't have that issue for me anyways.

Check the feedback, only registered since Fall of last year, all kinds of complaints, "fake card, money refunded, never received item, paypal claims, etc" That and the seller is using a gmail account, shipping from hong kong, and supposedly bought a bunch of these for their D300 to take advantage of a rebate.

what? I would like to see your SN. So far mine performs well with the camera and the card reader.
i bought several CF cards on ebay before i knew of the scam. they all worked okay, looked a little bit different from each other and one was slightly thicker.
i wasn't sure which was which so i replaced them all.
performance-wise i couldn't tell any difference but that was back in the day of sub-10mp cameras and only 3-4 fps.
i do remember getting occasional corrupt images that i haven't gotten in a couple years since i started buying all my memory from BH or adorama or JR camera.
with as cheap as memory is now plus the demand that current DSLRs place on memory cards i really think it nuts to gamble on ebay or off-brands or slower than recommended cards.

I was browsing at the local Best Buy tonight and saw what appeared to be good deals.
Pasting the full descriptions from Newegg, based on searching on the part numbers I read off of the actual two SanDisk packages I looked at:
SanDisk Ultra II 8GB Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) Flash Card Model SDSDRH-008G-A11. Package says 15 Mb/s. This was $25 at BB and is $35 on Newegg. $33 at Adorama.
SanDisk Extreme III 8GB Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) Flash Card Model SDSDX3-008G-A31. Package says 30 Mb/s. This was $40 at BB and is $80 on Newegg. $55 at Adorama after some stupid rebate you have to download and presumably mail in. Blech. $74 at B&H.
What's the deal? Is this something different? Do I need to get back over there and snap one up or is there some catch to these price differences? Seems like the POTN crowd prefers SanDisk cards.
I'm currently shooting my XSi with a "Transcend 8 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS8GSDHC6" that cost $18 at Amazon. Is that adequate, or should it be retired to backup status after buying a SanDisk?

i think you are fine, especially if you are happy with the results you are getting.
if you are hammering out 7-10 fps or even 5 fps @ 21mp you'll definitely want better cards...you'll see the difference.
if you are using a 21 mp camera i recommend extreme IV's. where you'll immediately see the difference is in the time it takes for the image to load to your LCD after taking a picture.

If anything seems to good to be true then it probably is.
If you can get a deal that is way below anything else on the market, it tells you one of a few things:
1) The dealer has negotiated very very good discounts and is passing them on - Sandisk arent going to do that for an E-bay seller as opposed to one of the big retailers are they?
2) The goods are stolen - now that is a fair possibility.
3) the goods are fake - also a strong possibility.
With those in mind, if i saw a deal like that i would be more inclined to think they were stolen or fake than the dealer being generous.

You could gain about 50% write speed by upgrading to one of the Sandisk Extreme 3 SDHC cards. The small internal memory of the XSi means that you could easily notice the difference in shot-to-shot time especially if you shoot RAW. The XSi is limited to about 14Mb/s write speed so don't waste your money on 30Mb/s cards.
For the other cameras mentioned here, the 40D is limited to about 10Mb/s and the new 50D and 5D2 are so fast that they will max out even a 30Mb/s card.
Here's the test results (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/camera_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-9424) for the XSi.

He still has SD cards though.
Have we been able to definitely conclude whether each Sandisk Extreme III CF card is supposed to have a unique serial number or whether each type (4gb, 8gb, etc.) has a serial number?
Given that Costco currently has Sandisk Extreme III 8GB CF cards for $39.99, I don't think it's worth taking a risk on the $29.99 Ebay ones, but that's just me.

Actually, no. They have a series ID, not individual s/n. I have several legit. SanDisk Extreme III cards from B&H and Adorama with matching s/ns. SanDisk rebated them for me, so I know they're accepted as good (leaving aside that I trust B&H and Adorama implicitly) and the net cost was like $0.05 each including postage for the rebate claim. But the counterfeiters are working at refining their counterfeits as fast as the legitimate vendors are working to thwart them.

There are cases of legitimate sellers, unknowingly receiving fake goods.
Maybe that is what happened to NEXTWEB-SALES and they have stopped selling the fakes when they discovered the error. (or maybe they just ran out of stock)

I have been shooting RAW when trying to do something "serious."
All these card variations are a little confusing. On the one had, you've suggested I get an Extreme 3 to boost my write performance, yet on the other you say that I shouldn't bother with a 30 Mb/s card because the XSi can't do it that fast anyway. But it's a 30Mb/s Extreme 3 card that I've been talking about! Mysteriously $40 at Best Buy and $55-80 elsewhere.
To make it more confusing, the data chart you've cited suggests that a differently-sized version of the other card I mentioned, the SanDisk Ultra 2, while supposedly being a 15 Mb/s card according to the package, doesn't muster that speed on the XSi, and in fact appears slower than my Transend. :?

Below is the response I received from the seller:
Our cards are authentic. You can call Sandisk at 1-866-sandisk to verify. They make batch cards, meaning that a batch has the same serial number. You can return the card if you would like, as long as it has not been inserted. Once received we will issue a refund less shipping and handling.

Where is the statistic that 90% or 95% of the memory cards on ebay are fake...... I read it somewhere.
If you are shooting for fun-- grab some cheap cards. If you shoot for pay-- then spend a few dollars more and purchase cards for legit dealers......not ebay dealers.

What is the difference between an Ultra and Extreme on the SD cards?
The Extreme III is rated as twice as fast as the Ultra II (30 vs. 15 MB/sec). You won't see this in your camera, but you might see close to it in your computer. And depending on your camera and shooting habits, you'll notice a difference in how fast the buffer clears after being filled. But rated speeds are on carefully tuned systems, sort of like EPA mileage figures. They're for comparison purposes and don't reflect what you'll see in real life.

I stopped buying any memory from ebay a couple of years back - 3 out of 4 "reputable" SD cards (for a compact camera) were fake. I know SD card are flimsier than CF cards, but they actually started falling apart. I also had a couple of CF cards that were found to be fake.
There are a series of "spot the fake" threads for ebay purchasers actually on the ebay site; you can look here for a good start with the Sandisk CF cards

If this batch number story is true, then Sandisk made it much easier for the fakes cards to be made since no one can differentiate the real ones and the fake ones given the identical number which the real and fake cards can share.
dan j
16th of March 2009 (Mon), 20:25
The best serial number solution would probably be owners who registered them so that you'd know if you had a copied number. But, that would only work if Sandisk kept the records and everyone registered. Not going to happen.
Heck, with the recession I wouldn't be surprised if we heard about a "good" dealer that snuck in counterfeit cards to make some dough. It happens - we had a grocery store do it back when I was living in Chicago.
