A little background...

A local coach recruited a team of girls while they were in the 1st & 2nd grade. Now they're 6th graders, and they're good, to say the least. The coach stole #23 from my team that I used to coach, with the offer of a personalized gym bag! How can you compete with signing bonuses?

These girls ran out of competition, so they've started beating up on the boys. In the shots below you'll see 4 quarterbacks from championship football teams getting a lesson in hoops from the same age girls.

Point being, these are some of the area's best 6th grade athlete's going head to head, and the girls win every week.

Extremely good work. Very, very nice. Skin tones, sharpness, action, faces, ball, proper perspective---all present in great form.

Nice shots man, looks good on my laptop. Missing coaching a bit from these, seeing some good fundamentals!

Nice clean shots. What was the lighting? It looks all natural to me.

And I find it funny that the girls team name is the Bulldogs. Anyone else notice that?

Thanks everyone. What a treat to wake up and get to read comments so nice.

I strobed the gym. Bouncing 2 AB800's off the back wall and ceiling. For whatever reason, this gym works really well for me. The only problem with it is it sometimes looks like its on a hill, (for you horizon police). :)

Mike, 10-4 on the missing coaching quote. I still shout at my daughters from behind the lens.

Thanks again.

Nice action and images are clear. Maybe on the dark side on my monitor...?
Hope the boys don't get a complex from having the girls beat them.;-)

Great shots. I am still amazed when I see great indoors shots like these. I am more of a daylight, natural light shooter and these shots are very encouraging.

Will you show us more later?

John, I am with these guys. With work like this, there's really no crit I can offer. Beautiful job on the lighting, you absolutely nailed this game.

HP, Matt, Tonybear and Scott - Thanks. These shots are from 2 or 3 games over the season. It takes me a while to generate POTN worthy stuff!

I will add my two thumbs up review. Excellent work and nothing to add that is not just nit picking.

Thanks K. My set up in this gym is very similar to one of your set ups, with a lot of light bouncing off the back wall. It's so nice to have a movie screen size soft box.

I've coached both girls and boys teams. At this age, the girls will do really well because they are bigger than the boys. But in a year or two, they won't stand a chance against a good boys team. It's great that they are playing against boys. It will make them better. The best girls I've seen have played like boys on boys teams. We usually mix up boys and girls at our club practice scrimmages. It makes the girls more aggressive.

And great photos as well!

Damn John these are nice! I will give you some critique though so you don't get a big head. #2 is a tad hot. Crisp, nice color and no shadows. Two thumbs up.

Dan,

Fine then, I'll delete #2! You're always trying to cause trouble! Damn! And my head is not big, you're just jealous cause I've been chatting online with hot babes all day.

:)

Thanks bud. -John

Great shots...a real pleasure to view. Number 4 is my favorite. The determination on both player's faces tells the story. These are an inspiration to all of us who struggle with the basics.

Probably a stupid question, but when you're shooting with stobes, you can't shoot a burst of images, can you? You've got a second or two refresh for the strobes, I take it, so you get one shot at a time. Am I wrong?

Sportshot, Beach, Rex... Thanks guys. These shots mostly represent what equipment can do. I took shots in the same gym last year with a 550 EX flash, on camera. My results were only okay, and it was rare to get a "good" shot. The addition of strobes makes life very easy.

Shleiken, yeah, there's a small pause. I think it's okay to fire quicker than the manual says, but it's supposed to be 1 second to recharge fully. I often click twice, then just push the second shot in post. My camera is in one shot mode though. No bursts ever.

Thanks John. I'm used to shooting soccer and baseball outside and firing off 5-6 frames per sec. Obviously, when you're shooting with strobes, you've got to be a lot more precise.

Nice shots, by the way, but then, you've heard that a few times by now.
