This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 72hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #164".

This is all about having fun so have at it!!!

This round will end Tuesday 2/24 at ~9:00am EST

Continuing the NE vacation spot theme from #162, an Osprey on Martha's Vineyard.

As an aside, did anyone else like the idea of having access to the original like in #162, or does that go against spirit of this? I liked having more pixels to play with and the option to crop but still be at 1024 wide. If you have an opinion one way or the other post it with your edit.

I just couldn't get a decent edit on this one. So, I thought I would try this. ;)

In PSE6: Duplicated the background layer into 2 more. Lasso selected the bird/nest and deleted the rest so they were each isolated on own layer. Added a bit more canvas. Moved the bird/nest. Created a new BG layer and filled it with sky texture. Used eraser with 50% opacity to erase edges and blend the nest/bird sky into the new sky.

Picasa: Fill light, graduated filter and saturation boost.

Photoscape: Frame line and resize for posting.

Time's up!

Monty - Nice clean edit. I like how you brought the osprey out of the shadows but kept it natural looking and the selective sharpening on its head to bring attention to it without being too obvious.

frenchfx - Your edit killed me. I laughed out loud when I saw this...then I looked again and laughed even harder. As far as the osprey goes the underside of the wing looks a little too bright, but the creativity is excellent.

MarineManiac - I never considered b&w conversion for this, not a bad idea. I would have liked to see how it looks at 1024 across (more detail) since it looks like you did a good job fixing the exposure, particularly around its head.

tkbslc - Great job moving the osprey to the upper right third, it looks good, you'd never know it wasn't there to begin with. I also like what you did with the sky, that blue looks great. The only thing I would change is I think the osprey could use a little sharpening.

So, the winner today is..........Monty!

Yeah, Monty, you did a great job getting the detail & color back into the bird. Good job.

That was actually a shot I never 'developed'. I just pulled the raw file off of a dvd and converted to jpg for this b&a. However, this shot was taken a second or two earlier.
