Got a free tour the other day of the Rinkoes train yard near Lambertville (NJ) / New Hope (PA).

The yard holds a bunch of dilapidated trains, and a couple of working tourist trains that have been running since the 1800s, notably the black river train.

the yard watchman was bored to death, so he was more than happy to take us around, and let us into the control room, etc.

#5 THIS one was handheld 1/30, at 800 iso. some light noise cleanup with "Noiseware", a free noise app highly recommended.

Ilya,

nice shots!

I bet your son loved the trains!

Best regards,
Andy

PS: Hmm ... running since the 1800's?
That must be one of the oldest surviving Diesel engines, then

Nothing like big old machines and a young boy to enjoy them. Good photos, thanks for posting them. I like number 5 too - the young engineer.

Thanks for the tip on the noise program.

Sorry I missed these until now, Ilya. (I'm still officially in mourning over my tripod).

Those are great. I especially love the caboose shot. We just don't see any of those any more.

Railroad people seem to fall into two camps: some are very friendly, and others seem to be excessively anti-social. You were lucky to find a good one.

When I was a teenager, I spent a lot of my time badgering train crews for a chance to climb up into the locomotive and have a look around. I really struck paydirt one time when a kindly Southern Pacific engineer took pity on me and actually let me ride along for an afternoon. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

These are great shots. Now go take some more pictures of your wife.

Andy - thanks ... yes, I thought it was a bit peculiar, but I take his word for it. I don't remember the exact year, but I think it was 1,89something. that train is in great shape though.

RJ, 4nR, Mills, Stoney, Titus, RI - thanks for the kind words

Tom, I haven't heard about this latest mishap (if it is a mishap), but I'll search for it!

Frankly my wife was scared of this kid because here we are in a deserted train yard, its a gloomy overcast day, and he is all by himself in a car, running out to greet us soon as he saw us pull up. And we have the two boys in the car with us.

He's about 20 somth, here is a pic of him, he was a real sweet kid though. I wanted to give him money for his trouble but he disappeared towards the end. Hmmm.
