I have two lenses right now, 18-55 & a 75-300...both canon
what do you recommend for a lens in between these two? I've been asked to take some family portrait shots and I like the effect the 75-300 has with the depth of field...but doesn't work too well indoors....

Depending on your budget, either the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L or the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Both are highly recommended on the Starter Lens (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56747) or Portrait Lens (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=58577)stickies. If you need something faster, and find the 55 mm end of the 18-55 is otherwise workable, you might consider the EF 50 f/1.8, which is well under $100 almost anywhere you look, and is a very high quality lens. The larger maximum aperture will also let you have a shallow depth of field, which I gather is what you like about the 75-300.

I second Jons suggestions.
I use those two lenses (Tamron 28-75/2.8 and Canon 50/1.8 ) on my 20D and love them both. I use the Tamron more often, as it is more versatile.
My (unscientific) quick test showed me that I get similar sharpness at 50 mm focal length with the 50/1.8 @ f/2.8, the 28-75/2.8 @ f/4.0 and the 18-55 @ f/8.
Best regards,
Andy
