Does anyone know of a good lens repair service (west coast preferred) available on the web. I have contacted one in NJ who seems like they work out of their house and one in CA who hasn't responded to my emails.

I have a Canon 24-85 USM lens that appears physically out of alignment -- there is a noticeable anglular offset of as much as 1 mm at the manual focus ring. The lens will not focus accurately at infinity although it focuses at anything less and seems to zoom smoothly and focus correctly otherwise. It has not been dropped (that I am aware of) and shows no signs of damage -- other than the slight angular offset mentioned. The Canon lens hood is a tight fit and it's possible that putting it on or taking it off could have torqued the barrel and caused the problem. A new lens can be had for less than $300.

Uhhh, Canon repairs them.

Canon in Irvine California will do a lens repair for a fixed labor charge plus any parts. If you contact them, and then send it in, they will do an estimate and then contact you for go-ahead.

Bob,

Thanks. I guess that was obvious (duh!) but I've generally found Canon to be a bit pricey (and extremely SLOW) so I was trying to get a handle on what cost to expect before I send it off. Seems to me an independent might beat Canon on price AND on turnaround.

Since I can get a new lens for less than $300 I'm not sure how much I want to invest in this one. ('Course, if it doesn't work after spending $150, that's not a bargain either :-)

Try KEH in Atlanta - sorry, East coast. I've not had a lens repaired but I had a couple of bodies repaired and they were good, fair priced and quick. Go to:
