Hey,
This sunday I've been invited to a dance. It's gonna be dark, tables to sit, eat, chat, big wooden dancefloor. I really wanna capture the moments but I wanna dance aswell. I'd be deathly afraid of leaving my Drebel, lens, flash, etc etc on the table while I go nuts (:D) on the dancefloor. However, I'd also love to try to flash+1s exposure to get that lovely effect.
It's gonna be one of those 'once in a lifetime' events (the people I'm with, etc...) so I'd love to capture the night on "film" but I wouldn't want to ruin the night by shooting instead of dancing.
Thoughts? I'd love to bring my dSLR but I think I'm just gonna bring my tiny ixus and compromise...

I have taken my cameras into so much clubs, I can actually dance with it in my hand.
If I want to dance I will just put my camera away for a while in the backpack and either place it with the DJ or at my seat or under my coat.
Also, 1s exposure maybe be even too long if they are dancing fast and moving a lot , a little motion blur goes a long way.

The ole G3 comes out for the risky environments, however taking it out at night isn't much help around here, did the great pub race with work late last year, got asked not to use the camera at most spots!
Had the G3 in the car the other day and had an oportunity to take a shot as 'proof' of something I saw, two identical BMW's side by side in a car park, one registration was 9318, the other was 93I8, first glance I thought I was seeing double!

Very interested experience indeed!

I pretty much keep it with me all the time. I haven't had a reason yet to use it, but I know that the one time I leave it home is the one time I'll miss out on taking a Pulitzer Prize winner.
Hey, a guy can dream...

People think im crazy, wherever I go I bring my camera. the other day I brought it to work and started taking random pictures of everything. I took it in a club one time. If you leave it under your chair, on on the seat with your coat over it no one will even notice. They are all too busy dancing and having a good time. If your nervous about it just glance over at it the odd time to make sure everythings still there.
Giving it to the DJ to hold may be a good idea, try it.

I take my 300D (and soon my 350DXT) just about anywhere i go. I mostly leave it in my car as thats the best place to see oppertunities on the way home from work. Any event im at even if its personal or birthday party, etc i always bring atleast the 300D.
Wether u dont have a descent body to carry around u all the time or not, you should atleast invest in a good compact P&S that u can carry in ur pocket if u dont got a car or somewhere to put it cuz ur missing lots of oppertunity.

...uhm... I don't know what you're trying to get at, but it doesn't seem to contribute. I haven't danced in forever, and am really looking forward to go this one time. I love the ROM, but photography isn't allowed anyway.
Thanks everybody for all the suggestions!

You've been "invited". Don't let the camera get in the way of your social life. If this goes well, you'll get more chances to take along the DR. If you spend a lot of your time taking pictures, you won't get re-invited. Take the Ixus and mingle.
