Yep, I see the sticky thread with basic photography books, I've been searching the forums, I've even been on Nikonians site (book recommendations only :D), I've searched Amazon, and I've found they have a myriad of basic photography books, and not so many advanced ones - out of which none seems appropriate, some of them took the wrong turn somewhere and are no good. Just an example; a quite good book, judging by average grade, got a review that revealed its painful weaknesses, and I wouldn't have it for free.

So anyway, I'm dying for you to give me (us) an advice of which advanced book about photography to buy. I'm particularly interested in outdoor portrait/people photograpy. You are also welcome to suggest any other good or preferably outstanding advanced books...

I've read some books myself (3 :)), but I can't really recommend them here since they're covering the basic/intermediate area and I haven't found them informative quite enough.

What I want is a book that assumes you're not a complete idiot, that you've been photographing for a while and want to improve not like, begin, that also assumes you know the camera, DOF, the basic rules of like how not to make ugly photos, and all the rest of the nitty gritty. I want a book that will on one page put questionmarks in my mind and on the other answer them.

Also recommend a book only if you've read it through and through. ;)

Galen Rowell's Vision, or for that matter, almost anything he wrote. It'll put the question marks in your mind and send you out to find the answers.

Well, that did it for me, thanx! ;) I've already placed an order at Amazon along with Inner Game of Outdoor Photography by the same author.

I reckon those two will keep me occupied for a while... Still, awaiting new recommendations.

Here are some good books that I have read recently:

1. Learning to See Creatively by Bryan Peterson
2. Photographing the World Around You by Freeman Patterson

These are good books if you want to learn how to make a pleasing photograph.

Another book I flipped through at the bookstore a couple of weeks ago was Portrait Photography: Secrets of Posing & Lighting by Mark Cleghorn. I picked up a few good tips for making portraits of people. I haven't actually read the whole thing yet though.

A Photographer I know actually recommended that I start reading art history books rather than photography books. If you think about it many of the same qualities that make a pleasing painting also make a pleasing photograph. He recommended the History of Art by H.W. Jansen.

Hope this helps.

I can very highly recommend the Rowell, Peterson and Patterson books mentioned. They're all great.

While I was waiting for my books to arrive, I've read through the Perfect Portrait Guide by Michael Busselle and David Wilson, and I can more than recommend it. However the title might be a little misleading, it's not really a guide that would tell you what to do, it is basically a photo book, divided into logical chapters, with very thorough explanations for each 'main' photo and a short explanation for a 'supportive' photo. It's a book that shows you possibilities and gives you ideas, ideas of what to look and ideas of how far you can go. I rented the book, but I think it should be in my bookshelve, and it will. ;) A+++++++ book. Would read again! :D
