As far as I can tell, there really isn't much difference between the 5 and the 5x other than the 5x being a newer model replacing the 5. On the inside, I did notice that the 5x has a new center dividers that allows you to hold a camera at the top and the bottom of the bag. With the 5, the camera (with a lens) sits at the top of the bag.

The 5x seems to have a square profile, I'm assuming to allow a laptop to fit in much better. The 5 has the same compartment but the top is more curved instead of squared because the compartment wasn't originally designed to fit a laptop in.

If you go to the Tamrac site and go to the Expedition 5x page, you see that they're using pictures of the 5 and the 5x bags. The 5x pictures will have a fold at the bottom of the center dividers while the 5 pictures do not. The 5x will also look squarish while the 5 has a more rounded top. Other than those two, I can't see any other differences between the two bags.

BTW, if it matters, I have the Expedition 5 and the Expedition 6x bags. :)

Very good price at $90, the 5X is about $140. But I don't know if the 5 has the three tripod straps on the back as does the 5x(see photos.) The tripod sits between the two back kidney-shaped pockets and two feet go into the bottom back pocket. I have the 5X and love it.

Yes, the 5 has the three straps plus the foot holder pouch just like the 5x.

Based on the picture of the 5x you posted, I really don't see any exterior difference between the 5 and the 5x. Even the shape, which I thought was kind of squarish on the 5x as it is on the 6x, looks the same.

Here's a pic of the Expedition 5 and a review (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=142874). It looks the same as the 5X. I don't know what the advances could be, but for $90, if it's new, I'd grab it.

I thought the the 5x isb eing advertised to allow two cameras to be held in the bag with the lenses mounted. However, that picture of the 5x interior doesn't show such a divider. It looks exactly like that of the 5. If that's the case, then there must be absolutely no difference between the 5 and the 5x other than price.

Does the 5 or 5X accommodate a 1D size body or XXD with grip?

Yes. I have a 40D + grip + RC2 plate and it's fine....

It's about six inches deep and will protect even a 1 series body with lens attached. It's a very well constructed workhorse bag with very dense padding inside and on the shoulder straps.

A 1D camera, which is a little taller than an xxD camera with a grip, is taller than the inside depth of the Expedition 5 backpack so that will cause the part of the bag above the hotshoe of the camera to bulge out a little. But that won't prevent you from closing the zipper unless the laptop compartment has something rigid in it (like a laptop). If you're planning to carry a laptop in the backpack also, the 6x might be a better choice.
