Hi, I am thinking of buying the EOS 300D Digital. Body only. This basically doesn't come with anything except cables and software. What kind and how much mem should I buy? Do I need the High Speed Compact Flash vs regular flash? The sales guy told me that I would need the fast mem or I will have to wait 20 seconds between pictures. Is this true? Wheres the cheapest place to buy this mem?
Thanks

Right now the best price point is for 512 MB to 2 GB cards. Get a couple of 512 MB or 1 GB cards. The DR will be able to write to high-speed cards faster than to regular ones, but not as much as the salesman told you. Rob Galbraith (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007-6425) has performance numbers for the Digital Rebel/300D. Since you're calling it the EOS 300D, I conclude that you're not in the US, Canada or Japan, but where you are will affect who we suggest as a vendor.

Hi,
check out Rob Galbraith's CF database (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007-6425) to see the write speeds of various cards in the 300D.
The size of the card is personal preference - will you be shooting RAW&JPEG or just JPEG? How many images will you need to be able to store before downloading them to a PC/Laptop/Portable storage device?? And last but not least, how many images are you prepared to loose in the very rare event that a CF card has problem?
Have fun,
Cheers

Your salesman was feeding you a line of bull with the 20 seconds between pictures remark.
I have a couple of the Sandisk Ultra 2 cards....by no means the fastest available....and I've never had to "wait" to take another shot. Granted, I don't do alot of high speed shooting (or I would have gotten the 20D), but you don't have to get the highest speed cards.

No I live in CA San Diego. Found a Site on the Web that is selling EOS 300D body only (Black). Site is in NY city. I think I will have to add a battery, charger, and Mem. I have the lenses. They want $354. NEW. In stock.

In California - quick get over to NewEgg (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=65103). SanDisk Ultra II 1 GB at $76.99 and free shipping . . . it's an end-of-month blowout.

Be very wary of some shops with extremely low pricing - there have been reports of fraudulant stores out of NYC.

The ultra II is faster than the regular cards. i'm currently using the regular sandisk cards. I have to wait a few seconds for it to finish writing when the buffer is full.
I plan to get an Ultra II card in the future.

Oops - if they want you to buy the battery and charger separately, watch out. Check them out at http://www.resellerratings.com/.

I have a 1GB Lexar 80x CF card... very happy with it. I'm seriously considering grabbing another one, although I've never completely filled this one I do shoot mostly in jpeg.

The body only package comes with a battery and battery charger. If you want additional ones I use http://sterlingtek.com - don't let the prices fool you, they sell good quality products.
As long as you don't buy a slow old memory card, the speed of the card won't make much difference. Don't go buying the fastest card around, the 300D can't take advantage of it. One reason I upgraded to the 20D was I was waiting for the 300D to be ready so I could take shots, not all the time, only when I wanted to take quite a few all in a row.

If you're in San Diego, check out George's Camera at 30th and University. They're not the lowest priced, but they've got good, fair prices. Given that Canon just released the XT, you might find a good price on a body there.
I bought my 85mm f/1.8 from George's, and I'm happy as can be with not only the product, but also with the price I paid...

Hi, so it is a waste of money to buy high speed cards for the Rebel?
Thanks.

Without even knowing the name of the shop (Is it Broadway Photo or A&M Photo?), I can pretty much guarantee you that it is a scam. If they are telling you that it doesn't come with a charger or battery, or that the included battery is only good for a few shots, then it's definitely a scam. The camera comes with a charger and the included battery will last hundreds of shots between charges. Buy from a reputable dealer. B&H is about the best online photography shop there is, with Adorama running a close second.

According to Rob Galbraith's CF Database, there's not much difference between the standard cards and the high speed cards. I'd suggest the Sandisk Ultra II. It's reasonably priced, and will give you good speeds if you upgrade to a camera that takes advantage of it in the future.
