What if Canon made a 1D like camera using 1.6 crop sensor? I see alot of possibilities and give them more excuse to build L class EF-S lenses :D

Professional build (heavy) on the body and consumer build on the lens (to save weight) doesn't make sense.
Professional build on the body and professional build on the lens does make sense...but already exists.

Thanks for playing.
I'd love a canon version of the d700, or even the d300, btw.
But I don't think I'll live to see it.

It's kind of weird that the 1D series has a 1.3 crop sensor and a low megapixel but I get that its for the high frame/sec rate.
The reason I can tell you that they wouldn't make a 1.6 crop pro body is because of image quality. Have you ever looked at a FF next to a crop sensor? Literally twice the size. The make a few high grade EF-s lenses for the advanced armature, but if you have the bucks to shell out for an L then you can budget for a Pro body. The 5D is not considered a Pro body but its way up there in build and image quality.

The 50D is good enough for a professional to use unless they outright abuse their equipment.

I shot a professional rugby league trial match on the weekend for some experience. I was using a 400D and obviously I'm not a pro, but one photog I spoke to was using a 30D + Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8!

I guess Canon could always add the feature that the new Nikon D3x has, where it could use cropped frame lenses and cut it's resolution down to a cropped resolution of ~10MP. I can't think of any EF-S lenses I'd want to use on it, though. I can see some use with the D3x, because there are some nice Nikon DX lenses out there.

Theres alot of possibilities if canon can make a pro body 1.6x it will be enough reason to beef up the ef-s line. I'd so kill for a EF-S 17-55 2L the size of the brick

What do you mean by "crop"? Does that mean it is smaller than 35mm?

Yup. Most DSLRs in use for the past several years have been smaller than the 35mm film dimensions. They came out because they are much less expensive to make, hence a greater number of users would buy into DSLRs. And, it worked, with some side benefits as well (smaller size, faster operation, smaller file sizes).

I want the toughness/water resistance of a pro body in a crop camera, even if not all other features included.

The resistance of nature on the 1D bodies is debatable and without weather sealed L lenses your still exposed to dust/water.

Good point, but no reason you can't use L's in those situations. People would reportedly wash their Oly E-1's under running water; I can see no real reason a camera can't be made to at least that IPX1 standard.

I'd like to see the XXD series cameras come with built in grips, so that they would "look" better and more aesthetically pleasing than they do with the "add-on" grips. Or at least have an option of with/without "built-in" grip, like the Canon EOS 1V, and 1VHS cameras.
Have them have them look like the 1D series cameras.
I also think that the XXD series cameras should have at least 7.5 FPS.

My friend runs his 1d MKII under water after it gets mud splattered all over it. Don't know what you are getting at ;)

The only problem with Canon : a pro body 1.6 crop would mean a pro price ! What's missing is the camera which offers something in between the xxD and xD/1D/5D line.
Oteck

the 5D falls in between that, canon never considered it a pro body. I wouldn't mind paying $$$ for a pro body 1.6x

The 1D series has pretty damn good image quality. That tends to get overlooked with all the other features. It might have a lower amount of megapixels, but it carries low noise and also has bigger megapixels. Personally, I'd hope they keep the next 1D series camera to around 10-12 megapixels and work on improving the noise and processing speeds even more.

How about a full frame sensor that can shoot 5fps like the current 1ds3, and it has 1.3x and 1.6x crop modes with higher burst? Seems doable, right?
Maybe FF= 5fps, 1.3x =8 and 1.6x=12
I think a nice $1500-2000 pro featured APS-C camera would sell well, though. Just take the 40D, add a better AF system and add another 2fps burst and weatherproofing and you would be rocking.
No way canon wants to release pro lenses in EF-S though. If they release a pro lens in FF, everyone can use it. They limit too many people with high end budgets if they go EF-S.
