View Full Version : Low is good

Taking racing car shots from really low down when they are running pretty much flat out is an interesting excercise, not best done in the wet. The results however are very different from the usual 5ft off the ground variety. Hope you like these two shots, the first was kneeling behind the barrier downhill from a turn exit and the second was at barrier level on the finish line, taken as a three-quarter pan shot.

Great perspective. Number 1 is exceptional.

Nice shots Ken. I noticed Jeff Bloxham doing something similar at Thruxton.
Not sure my knees are upto it though ... plus you don't often get the chance when you're outside the wire :(

Ken, you continue to impress me. I like #1 the best.
I agree with Andy about the knees. I could be down there for awhile.

Hi Andy, thanks for the comments. The trick is to get as low as conditions permit. I have even lifted the bottom of the wire in the past and poked the lens through, just to make the shot different from all the others. Jeff is excellent at the low agressive shots, certainly my favourite way of shooting. You do need good knees or fit back if bending.

Wow!! I'm not much into motor sports but stuff like this is enough to get even this old guy excited. I really do like the perspective -- exceptionally nice work!

Lovely shots Ken..... but.....
kneeling down for the first one? Why? Don't tell me someone's filled your favourite hole in?

Hi Glenn, oddly enough, yes they have. However, that and the one below were taken from the lowest point of the dip, kneeling behind the barrier with the lens poking over the top. I have never seen anyone else use the same place or take the shot in the same way before, so I have the patent and have claimed the spot. Hope you are well, only another day with my old car, yipee. Looked at your gallery and noticed the 'three wheels on my wagon' shots. Not many Britcars by the looks of things - no Mr Reid?
This is not just low, it is close too:

Lovely shots, can't wait to get over to Donington this weekend, find some decent locations.

I don't think Donington and decent locations go together, even for we media types.

Nope, and fairly small grids as you noticed. They managed to field 23 starters for the race. Still, early days. The main focus of attention appeared to be Ms. Firman.
As to Donington... well, I was just going through some shots from the HSCC meeting on Sunday and wondering why I bother to take the camera there - a most unpleasant place for photography. Maybe I'll leave the cameras at home on Sunday and just watch the racing.
