View Full Version : First "studio" Session with our daughter

My wife Emily and I recently got into photography when she was pregnant with our daughter Katelyn. We just (last week) got some studio strobes on Katelyn's 2 month birthday. We are very excited but still have lots to learn. Here are the results of our first real attempt. These all have pretty minimal edits. C&C is very appreciated.

Nice pictures. Like the expression in #3. I have a daughter who will be 3 months soon. Man they do grow fast. Welcome to the club and hope to see more postings.

Three is my favorite. I like the way they are looking into each other's eyes.

Three is my favorite too, unfortunately I was in such a hurry to get that expression that I messed up my focus a little bit when I shot it. I knew as soon as I hit the shutter release that it was going to be a little soft :(

Good job on the first session. #3 for me also. As said before I like the way the baby and mom are making eye contact.

Sorry for the delayed response, we purchased the Calumet Genesis 200 2 Light Kit.

We are very happy with the setup so far, and the price is pretty good. We have been shooting in medium to small size indoor spaces so far, and haven't had to turn the lights up past "half" of their power.

For number 3 I had the 2 genesis 200's at about 45 degrees on each side. We were in a very small space so they weren't as high as I would have liked them, but they were about a foot above the subject and 3 feet away from subject. I don't have an incident meter so I just adjust the lights until I think the lighting ratio looks good. For this shot the Key light was at camera right, it was set 2 stops higher than the fill light to camera left.

I also had a gold reflector on the ground in front of the subject with a flash shooting onto it with pretty minimal power to cast a little gold fill.
