the 3001 doesnt have the abilit to mount the center shaft ninety degrees in relation to the legs for some fancy angles, you also get a couple of pound bump in weight capacity. I wish I could draw you a picture it would be easier to explain. Try this, you can remove the center shaft and make a T out of the tripod and hang your camera off the side. I put my hands on both and decided to spend the extra cash to get the 3021 pro and I'm glad I did.

Actually, there are 2 versions of the 3001 legs. There's 3001, and 3001PRO. I own the 3001PRO and it does have the ability to mount the center column horizontally.

Both "PRO" versions can mount the center shaft at 90* as cmM points out.

The differnce between the 3011PRO and the 3021PRO is simply size,. a substantial difference in fact.

If I were going to have just one tripod,. I would get the 3021 to "do it all" ...

...but instead I have two,. one beast to handle the large lenses on a gimble,. and one smaller one with a ballhead for everything else,. in which case i went for lightweight and portability,.. the 3011PRO

I think they were discussing the 3001 and 3021, but now that you mentioned the 3011, how much do the legs way on that as opposed to the 3021? I tried looking up the specs at B&H, but they didn't list the legs separately.

Actually,. :o "3011" was just a typing error :o (i'm pretty fond of those...)

I have a 3001 pro in fact..

Sorry.

How do you like it? I've got the boat anchor listed in my sig (20 yrs old and 11.5 lbs.) and am looking for something lighter to carry on my backpack. Either of them would fit the bill but, if the 3001 Pro is sturdy enough, I'd rather go for the light weight. The Expedition 5 with gear weighs enough! :D

I find my 3001Pro to be sturdy enough. I can't compare with the 3021 as I've never owned or used, but I like my 3001Pro tripod with a 3030pan/tilt head.

I like the 3001 a lot,. again,. it is my "small" tripod,. it can do just about everything I need of a tripod,. about 85% of what I'd use a tripod for,.. if broke it down by differing tasks,. the other 15% is actually just holding the large lenses,. and thats where the big Gitzo comes in.

But the 3001 is a lot easier to carry around.

Thanks guys, I don't know about mtndew, but you convinced me to go with the 3001. CDS - what head do you use on yours?

I used a Giottos MH300 for a while and a Graf Studioball now now that can handle the Wimberly sidekick.. so in a pinch,. even my "little" tripod can handle the 500mm ;)

I have both the 3001 and the 3021Pro (actually the Manfrotto versions which have different numbers). For use with a long telephoto lens the 3021 is noticeably steadier. For carrying around in a backpack the 3001 is noticeably lighter. The only time I found myself using the 3001 was when I was backpacking. Most of the time I used the 3021 because it was more steady.

Since I got a carbon fibre Gitzo 2228 I hardly use either of them any more. The Gitzo is as light as the 3001, as steady as the 3021 and the carbon fibre is much less prone to vibration than aluminium.

As for heads, I was happy with my Manfrotto 468RC until I got an Acratech Ultimate. Now the 468RC spends most of its time at home on the 3021 where I use it for shots around the house. The Acratech and 2228 go with me on almost all my travels.

This discussion got me off high center. I've got a Manfrotto/Bogen 475 tripod with the 3039 head and it's a tank. Worked great when I used to shoot medium format. But way too much tripod for by 20D. I spent this afternoon at Crick Camera in Kansas City, MO. I got to handle, set up and evaluate both the 3021Pro and the 3001Pro. I find the 3001BPro with a 486RC2 ball head enough for my needs. I don't anticipate getting more lens than the 100-400L, and I wanted something to fit in my backpack.

And it's enough for my JVC camcorder too.

Just my $0.02 worth
