I used the 70-200 f/2.8 IS for all of these, taken at DTW on 2/23.

Its amazing how airlines are trying to save $$ but end up adding thousands of pounds of paint on the thing making it less fuel efficient.

Oh, nice sets of shots BTW. I really like the first one with a touch of cloud in there.

As usual good stuff Andrew! Nothing but grey skies and no heavies here at MSP :(

Thanks everyone for your comments!

Thanks! I was hunting 802NW as I saw him on ACARS, 661US was a surprise once I herd him on the radio. I also was fortunate to catch one of the mysterious Northwest A330-200s today.

Wonderful. Nice sexy new paint jobs as well ;)

I am curious, do you have a viewing area you shoot from or how do you get so nice and close? (sorry, noobie to airplane photography)

Great Set...

No viewing area at DTW. You can use the top floors of both parking garages at times. All of these were taken by just me sitting in my car, pulled over on some lonely dirt road about 1 1/2 miles from the airport, listening to the scanner... And then jumping out at the last minute to get the shot! (it's cold outside)

Bring it on! I'm always for something new to get.

Those heavies look good in the new DL scheme. Seen a few A330s at LHR recently

Very nice shots!

I'm still not a fan of the DAL 744. There is just SO much white on it. They really need something to break up the monotony. When I saw N661US at McChord AFB a few weeks ago, it looked more like a cargo plane than a new commercial plane.

Love the spotting pictures. I'm always afraid of getting run off by security especially at airports now-a-days. But I'm glad to see these.

Did you crop these at all or were you just that close?

Very little cropping, mostly just to center the fuselage and make the JetPhoto screeners happy. For the 744, the first shot was taken at 100mm, the second was at 80mm. And for the 330, the first shot was at 78mm and the second at 85mm. So yes, I was just that close

And thank you for the nice comments everyone!

I'm guessing this was somewhere near Merriman Rd.? At one time you could park just off Goddard/I-94 service drive, the planes would come really low as the runway threshold was only about 100 yards away. "They" probably don't let anyone stop there nowadays, especially with a lethal looking big white lens.

No, I actually took all of these along Pennsylvania Rd. No parking on the service drives anymore, unless you can time it just right with the radio and flightaware, drive in, pull over, shoot, and get going again.
