I really liked 2Shiny's photo. The textures were compelling.
Also liked hnikesch's photo ... the contrast of colors was intriguing.
And Big Hands ... just because it's been snowing here and it was nice to daydream and have a great visual of a better place to be!
It's hard not being able to vote, or post a picture. Although it's hard for me to keep my mouth shut about most anything ...

OK, I see how it is. . . . :p . . . ;)
To add insult to injury, that pic was actually on December 30th of 2007. It was incredible weather there in the Dominican Republec even measured against SoCal standards. It's what I call a 'hammock shot' where I can picture myself there lying in a hammock watching the world go by.
That gives me an idea for a subject should I ever submit something worthy of winning one of these challenges :D

Jeff

I did not see anything in your rules that keeps you from voting or entering.
In the "hosting rules" that are included in one of the stickies, it indicates:
Choose a topic and list any special rules -- but DO NOT POST a photo.
And regarding voting ... the person running the contest breaks any tie ... so I figured it wouldn't be a good thing to vote -- possible conflict of interest.
Then again ... maybe nobody cares. I have some great sand pictures from the west coast of Vancouver Island, which is what gave me the idea. I sure wanted to post one of them. And maybe I just should have and to hell with the rules, but then I'm an anal rule follower and I would have felt guilty all week.

I think that means not to post a photo in the initial challenge posting. If you are going to post an entry, do it in a seperate post.

You guys might want to put heads together and clarify what you want it to mean. Given that the earlier contests were decided by the judge, not by votes, for the judge to submit an entry wouldn't have been fair. As it's being done by "don't vote for yourself" polling, is that still an issue? Likewise, since everyone can vote for up to 3 entries, is it likely that two photos will have the same number of first, second, and third place votes?

There you go again, . . . . . using logic ;)
I agree. I see nothing wrong with the posting of an entry by the previous winner.
I would also like to see Sue's sand pics. Afterall, isn't the sharing of pics the whole intent? The more, the merrier!

I am not sure who writes the rules, but just amend the rules to read that judges may not vote for themselves. In a tie, the judge ALWAYS loses. Heck, to be the judge, they had to just win one anyway.
Jon
10th of March 2009 (Tue), 18:16
No need for that amendment; it's already in there that nobody should vote for their own photo:
Please do not vote for your own photo.
Please, no comments until after voting closes. We don't want to influence other votes. Thanks.
In the unlikely event of a tie, maybe a 24-36 hour "sudden death" faceoff of the tied photos?

Why not post it somewhere other than under this particular topic ?
Either in the Compact Digitals section or Landscapes with the general populus.
A good picture is a good picture.

One for fun and to make you smile (even though Jake is a bit out of focus)
taken with my S5IS

And maybe the one I would have entered, if I had entered, but I didn't cause I thought I couldn't ...
this is Long Beach on the west coast of Vancouver Island, captured with my A70 in 2004.

BTW, I want to add an honorable mention from me to SteveInNZ. I didn't vote for it because I believe it broke the "no borders" rule, but the photo portion itself looks good.

I thought it was within the rules, as the red "border" was actually a part of the picture. Judge?

Perhaps the host can check each image for rule compliance and note disqualifications *before* voting opens? Then we can assume they are all legit.
I see your point, but one can argue that any border is part of the picture. In this case it wouldn't have affected my vote because however you define it, that treatment didn't do anything for me. What is left of the photo is really nice though!
sue.t
11th of March 2009 (Wed), 16:53
SteveInNZ did send me a note asking me if the image was okay with the border, and if not he offered to delete it. I replied that I wasn't an enforcer and the voters would make the decision with their votes.
The border on that picture seemed to be a part of the 'artwork', along with the text. It wasn't just an add-on frame or black border that some use to highlight their photo. A quick crop would have eliminated any concern or debate though.
Jon

I thought it was within the rules, as the red "border" was actually a part of the picture. Judge?I think I'd agree as it is all part of a visual pun on time and Time (http://www.time.com/time/) Magazine (whose cover has that red border, like National Geographic has a yellow one). Not that I'm to be relied on as arbitrator in the contests or anything.
