View Full Version : What would happen if...

Not sure if this would go here or not, if not, I guess a mod can move it.
Anyway, with so many people expecting a new camera every year and when canon does produce a new camera half the people expecting it get mad and threaten to go to Nikon because canon "did not listen to its customers" I got to wondering, what would happen if canon did NOT produce?
By produce, I mean just that. What happens if there is no camera from Canon this year? Besides the fact that Olympus, Leica, Sony, Nikon, who ever the heck else produces camera, canon would fall behind the game.
But what if they took the year off just to see what everyone else puts out this year? What would YOU do if canon did not put out a 1DsMKIV or a 60D? Or what ever else you are looking for in a body.
So there you have it, no new canon DSLR body this year... what would happen. What would YOU do?

Pretty good comment. Life goes on. Canon still has very nice cameras with latest goodies in them.
If canon does or does not release any new 1D series bodys, I´m still going to buy 1DMk2n or 1DMk3...

I would....just keep shooting? I really wouldn't care that much, I never buy new stuff anyway and I'm perfectly happy as is. And if it means better bodies next year, something as awesome as the bodies Nikon have spit out recently, then all the better.

I'd keep shooting just like everyone else. What Canon does or doesnt do will not affect the way the products I have and thus not affect if I shoot or not. It SHOULD be the same for you, unless you make it a tradition to buy a new camera with every tax return.

I feel the same way. I still got a 30D and got that pretty much right after it came out :)

Talking about/dreaming about a new camera body or lens is fun. But it's not the be-all end-all to photography.
I'm with perryge and the Flying Tog!
The sun would rise (quite near my house, actually) and then set again, in a highly dramatic "boiling the oceans" kind of way....and I'd keep taking pictures.

Truth is that even if Canon didn't put out a new camera, they would still have to price their current offerings to be competitive to what the other manufacturers have. So, you would have lower priced Canons with no new upgrades.
As for what I'd do? Same as if they put out a new model. Use the one I have. I doubt that the next model would have any compelling features to ditch my current set up. I doubt I will outgrow my current camera any time soon. I used the same 35mm film camera for 25 years. Which isn't to say that I didn't covet any newer models, but I was always happy with my results.

Agreed. Just spent the weekend with someone with a 20D, and he is still in love with it. I think most people's rate of learning/skill development is much slower than product life cycles.

My 40D would still rock! And i would still be the limiting factor in my photography results - not the camera :)

If Canon do not release anything this year, not bothered. I would like to see a 1D mkIV but if it comes out or not, wouldnt bother me.
IF they release something stupid like a 1D IIIn, (IMO) I have a feeling a lot of top end sports togs would really not like this since the n on the mkII was just a fix rather than a whole new system.

What would I do? I have no idea, but I'm thinking extensively about this for a while already. I don't like to buy used bodies, especially because we would need few of them, and I just don't trust people with this. I saw way too many adds from people for who I know what and how they shoot, and who were selling "brand new" few years old 1dmk2 with only 5.000 actuations... if you believe that number ;)
There's also no way for us to go mk3 direction. I tried quite few, few other colleagues tried quite few (one of them changed 5 of them), and noone has anything good to say about af performance. So for us, there are two chances.... waiting with this what we have, and hope all cameras will last long enough. Or go with Nikon. But it's too much of equipment to change, so this is really last option to consider.

All the cameras that I want are from the past, so not an issue. That said, resultant complaint threads on this site would be pretty entertaining, at least initially.

I am in a different situation than your guys. My wife and I both like to shoot, but we currently only have one 40D. I am in the market for the second camera, so we don't have to fight each other.:-) I had been waiting for the 5Dm2 to come out, but I am not very happy with its 3.9 fps. I hope Canon will release a NEW replacement version of 1Dm3 soon. I was thinking to buy the 1Dm3, but I decide to hold on because I want at least 12MP. If Canon don't have any new camera in the PRO area for this year, I will have to go with D700. I can switch to Nikon easily, because I do not have the big investment in Canon lens.

For me it would depend on what everone else came up with, but likely I would not be worried as Canon (or some rumor about Canon) said they were looking to 2010 for the really cool stuff to come out, so just have to be patient.

Good choice. If there is one reason to switch to our dark side, it's the D700. Are you keeping the 40D? I assume so, because you need two bodies...
It may be very different from the D700 but the 40D is still an excellent camera. A close friend of mine has one and we rib each other all the time. Saving up for a 700 though...

Any delay in bringing out a new body provides more time to get it better the previous model. There is no point in bringing out a new model based on time, it has to be based on technology improvements...my thoughts anyway...

Welcome to POTN Don!
I have to agree with your statement! changes in technology must come before a new camera upgrade is worth anything.
as for me! I am really happy with my 40D. I have some lenses to buy, and lots of peripherals, but I am not in the market to buy another body until the 5D mkIII comes out. unless I really strike it rich, then I would consider a 1D. I would love to see some new glass, but I doubt it would really change what I would buy.

I actually don't know why they would release a new camera. last year we got 2 new rebels, the 50D and the 5D Mk2. It is not like the 1 series is outdated yet and can still hang with NIkon's overpriced beast. Really I think they are still competitive at every given price point.
