Hello everybody.
I still have old Canon D30 and I'm considering buying the Sigma 50-500 for
that camera. How do you think: will it focus very slow on D30 ? If yes, I
should rather consider buying a new body... Maybe someone remember how it
worked with D30 ? I've got Sigma 24-70 3.5-5.6. I know it is not a top lens
but it is fast enough for me and I would be pleased if the big sigma focused
with similar speed. I've got also Canon 50mm 1.8 and speed of its focusing
is a nightmare. It rotates few times before focus. It is strange for me
because that lens is very bright so it should be faster.
Thank you in advance for all your advices.

The Autofocus on the D30 is good but only in good lightning. In dim or dark conditions it sucks. Even with the EF 50mm f1.4.

So how could you explain the fact that in average lighting my 24-70 3.5-5.6 is much faster in focusing than 50 1.8 ? All I'm worried about is that 50-500 will behave similar to my 50 1.8.

Which version of the 50mm F1.8 do you have?
The af on the MK I version is a bit shakey, but it is one of the first EOS lenses produced so that is to be expected.

I bought my 50mm 1.8 last year at BH so it is the newer version.

If you mean focus speed and not focus ability, then that depends on the lens so you should check out the focusing speed of the lens you desire.
What I meant was that the Autofocus of the D30 leaves a lot to be desired in not-so-bright conditions.

The trouble is that I will have no possibility to check it before ordering  And that's why I'm asking here if there is someone who used such set.

The slowest focusing lens I have ever used i the 50mm f/1.8
The Sigma 50-500mm with it's HSM focus motor will focus "rings" around the 50mm f1.8 as long as there is enough light.

I don't have a D30, but I used a Sigma 50-500 a lot on a D60. Autofocus was not quite as fast as with my Canon 70-200/2.8, but it was by no means slow and about the same as most of my other USM lenses. I certainly managed to get a lot of action sports shots with that camera.
