When I first picked up my G9 a couple of months ago, my first P&S, other than the work cameras, I hiked this trail to the beach and posted some photos. This is a trail I hike a lot. Takes me less than 10 minutes to get to the trail head from my house, and it’s rare to see people on the trail, which makes it pleasant, and it’s also the shortest way to this beach. These are from yesterday.

nice set, although i liked your first one much better...
the IQ seems to be lacking here, and your other pics were much
sharper with more clarity. looks to be compression issues maybe?

Thanks. :)

Very nice Gary, I always enjoy your Oregon Coast pics. My wife and I just reserved a house for our vacation in Aug. This year we'll be staying in Yachats. For the last 13 years we've been discovering the Oregon coast. We've stayed in Gearhart (2 blocks from the crash site :( ), Seaside, Canon Beach, Manzanita, Lincoln City and Gold beach. (Think that's all of them.) Just a few more years of work (I hope) and we'll be moving. Just not sure which city yet. LOL.

Thanks Mike. I’ve heard the Washington coast is nice too, tho I’ve never been there. What crashed in Gearhart? I was in Yachats for a night time football game about 3 years ago. Other than that, it’s been years since I’ve been north of Reedsport.

I’d have to agree with you. A couple of them were just too slow of a shutter speed. I don’t think they are compression problems. They just didn’t seem all that sharp in the first place. Shutter speeds on most of them were fine. It was cold and windy, so maybe I was just being sloppy with my shooting technique. Certainly looked great when I took them, but not so great once I got them up on my computer screen.

These are really Coooll! I'm seeing some great potential for PP on #6! :-)

Not to say it's not already awesome, but if you wanted to play.........

Thanks. The focus isn’t too good on #6, and the G9 doesn’t handle highlights like the sky on the horizon very well, tho if one was really good with Photoshop, you could probably fix that. The colors were fantastic. It was a gloomy day, and I didn’t expect the sunset that happened. I was wishing for my dSLR, a tripod and some GND filters. It’s a long ways to hike in there with a lot of weight, hence the G9, which I bought for hiking.

the first 6 are GREAT, the last two, not so much. (images seemed kinda soft. and some visible grain is present.

my hats off to your shots. very contrasty.

Thanks for looking and commenting. There is not enough noise in either of those last two images to bother me, but they are soft. Don’t know if it’s my technique or the focusing mechanism in the G9. As for the last one, I was standing at the edge of a cliff holding the camera at arms length to get it away from trees, and the shutter speed was too slow for doing that. I posted mostly for the different aspects of the same rock. One from the beach, and one from the cliffs.

Surprised you didn't hear about the crash. Here's a news story on it.

It sounds vaguely familiar. I think I found some satellite photos of the house after the accident, but I’ve slept since then. If I remember right, and I have slept since then, I think it was a non instrument rated pilot taking off in instrument conditions. Something I’ve done many times in the coastal marine layer when I know the tops of the crud are around 800 to 1400 feet. That is probably what the pilot was trying to do, but if you don’t have some instrument training, you can quickly become disoriented. This is when you have to trust your instruments, not your instincts.
