After 6 months, I finally ordered a 20D...(fingers crossed cos I haven't got it yet or know if they have any stock)...I won't be supprised if they don't have any cos I am in Australia and we get all our stuff last and WAY over-priced. I was going to buy one in Japan when I was there in October but no stock ANYWhere! in tokyo...I spent a whole day running around all the usual spots but no luck...anyway...I will get to the point.
Does anyone know what the warranty policy is like on theEOS's? The place I am getting it from imports them from the US (so I guess its a US warranty) but on the US canon website they say that the EOS's have a 1 year worldwide warranty. I rang Canon Australia (customer service is fairly average by the way) and they didn't know and hung up on me.
I also get a Mac warrantly? with the camera (to replace/compliment the Canon one) but I have never heard of it here but apparently its a big thing in the US??? So, basically I dunno how all this works. Oh yeah, the shop doesn't really know about the worldwide warranty thing otherwise they wouldn't have got the Mac warrantly right????
Any ideas? or basically what I wanna hear is that no one has had a problem with their 20D yet and I have nothing to worry about.

My Canon EOS 20D warranty is sitting right in front of me and says for US and Canada Only. It's for 1 year from time of purchase. My lenses have a USA warranty only. Your area may be just Australia or possibly an International Warranty. More important is whether you have a local service center in Australia. I'd Google Canon Service Centers and see what you come up with.
Looks like they have an Oceania Division headquartered in Australia

Gastroboy,
welcome to the forum :D
You asked about a mack warranty.
Using my superior internet skills  , I managed to enter 'Mack warranty' at the google site and identify the correct website.
According to http://www.mackcam.com/repairs_center.html , if you buy an extended Mack warranty, it will also cover manufacturer defects up to 3 years worldwide, provided you contact them first and get a repair estimate from an authorized repair center and have it approved by them before the work starts.
Now, I don't have much experience how difficult it is to actually have them agree that it is a 'manufacturer defect'. They explicitely state
Please remember, this warranty does not cover equipment which has been misused, tampered with, modified or damaged as a result of accident, liquid, grit, impact or lack of proper care as indicated in the manual of operations. Accessories are not covered under the terms of the warranty.
So ... in theory, it looks like the way to go.
Still, hopefully somebody with experience with a Mack warranty can contribute whether it works fine in practice or not.
Best regards,
Andy

Another suggestion is use you AE card (if you have one) and it will extend the warrenty for another year. Thats what they claim, I have never had a chance to use this offer.
Hope this helps

HAHAHA CANON WARRANTY? I got a 20D last october (waited a month for it) and it lasted 9 days before it broke. At least Canon was nice enough to give me a new one after they looked at it in January. Bottom line is don't care about your warranty unless you're a cps member because Canon won't care about it either.

Considering they fixed my D60 at no cost and returned it (two week end-to-end) when the viewfinder LCD died just out of warranty, I'd certainly disagree with your characterization of their attitude to warranties.

Btw, when you buy a canon camera that comes with a year warranty....Do you have to fill anything out and mail it?
I bought mine like a month ago and haven't though about that.

You don't have to, at least in the US. Proof of purchase is enough. When you register on-line they offer a few extra bells and whistles, IIRC (of course, I've lost the list of them).

Proof of purchase was all they asked for at the service center.

abat: I ordered from centre.net.au ...these guys are in Vic, shipping is $10 with insurance at $26.
I took the last Enthusist kit for $2800 :-). I think they have some bodies and maybe the 18-55 lens kit left. Its damn hard to find the 20D in Oz.
Anyway, it turns out that the camera is actually imported from Malaysia etc...but it does have the Mack warranty. I am going to pick it up in 2hrs so wish me luck and thanks for the advice guys! I have to have a look in the box to see what (if any) warranty cards it has.

Its damn hard to find the 20D in Oz.
I saw 20D today in Paxton's Camera.
It was sitting on the shelf next to 350D. :)
This shop is in Parramatta, Sydney, NSW.

Thanks Gastroboy. I'd noted the centre.net price too. That equates with about US$2150 - very close to the B&H price but with international warranty. Very impressive given the enthusiast kit goes for about $3,400 (US$2600)in Teds/Paxtons. I've bought stuff from centre.net before and it has been fine. Interested to hear from you once you've picked it up.

I'm a bit slow in getting in this discussion, but this is my first day. I just bought a 20D with 18-55, 70-300, battery pack/handle and 1Gb CF card. I am upgrading from a G2 and 35mm film cameras. I have had the G2 for several years and used it all over the world and in all kinds of conditions. I have never had to use the warranty. I have even dropped the camera without any damage. I hope the 20D holds up as well so that I won't ever need the warranty. Good luck with you purchase.

I went to Canons site to see where warranty service is provided in the event I ever should have a problem. I think it stated to send it to either New Jersey or California for my Zip code (Massachusetts). I believe I've seen threads here of folks that appear to have service centers near where they live rather than mail it to a service center. How does one find a local service center if they do exist as they don't appear to be on Canons site?

Hi Guys,
Well after spending 1hr in peak hour traffic (btw thats considered REALLY bad in Melbourne :-)), I got the camera. Looks like the mackcam warranty is a 1year jobbie and looks like your standard warranty from what i can see. The EF-S 17-85 is a Canon international warranty, so thats all good.
Feels really solid so yeah, i hope I never have to worry about the camera.
abat: yeah the sale from centre is actually from a distributer in malaysia, the invoice you get is from Global Network Services not centre. This is aparently how they get away with not charging you GST! (hence the significantly lower price), not that it mattered for me cos I am off to Italy with the 20D in a month! - oh yeah, 3-4weeks for the next enthu kit shipment from centre for those interested.
Anyway, I have a moved up from a G3 so I can carry around its battery as a spare (i can right?? BP511 is basically the same as a BP511A?)
Thanks for the responses....
