View Full Version : LCD Freeze - several seconds!

I'm a veteran of many Canon digital cameras (and some other brands) and now have a G3. I've noticed something that is most annoying and I never experienced it with my G2 or G1 in the past...

Several times, when pressing the shutter release part way in order to focus the shot (I do NOT enable continuous focus) the LCD image will freeze up for several seconds. Something like 3-5 seconds! It is MOST annoying!

This seems to happen most often at telephoto settings and it occurs both with outdoor and indoor (well-lit) scenes. And with the optional telephoto lens, the problem seems even worse.

Is my camera a lemon? Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Thanks...

Yep, I've got the same. I can't remember which settings I was using at the time (didn't bother to check), but the LCD freezes occasionally for maybe 2 seconds. I doubt its as long as 5 though! I think it happens when you change modes after having pressed the shutter half way, or when you come out of the video mode. I'll play around this weekend and see what I can come up with.

I wrote to Canon Support about this and they told me that this was normal behavior for a G3. All I know is this is the 4th digital camera that I have owned and the first to do this.

Hey TD27, how do you like the image quality of the G3 compared to your G2, G1?

I believe this is happening in (low light/low contrast) situations when the autofocus has trouble to focus. The camera goes from close up to infinity maybe several times, and during that time the LCD freezes.
In telefoto setting, this is much more obvious. Seems to be the price to pay for the new and improved 4x tele...
