I have a client (unrelated to photography) that needed photos done of his products. I offered to do them and he really loved what I did.

I tried to keep the shots very artistic.

I will be shooting another set tonight. Please critique my first set?
(BTW, this is the closest I could get to the product. My lens does not have macro ability)

The first one is slightly too dark. The second one, it looks like they need to be cleaned. The last two have too much glare on them and taking away from the products. Overall, the photos aren't bad. But they don't make me want to buy them. Maybe use a real model?

The black isn't very flattering. Is artistic what the client wants? You should look at this for ideas: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=61394

Looks like that picture has been removed. Would have loved to see it.

Good start but I find it hard to pick out the detail which is a big problem. I think the lighting needs to be more uniform across the items, there is too much glare in places and too much shadow in others.
Might help with the focus aswell.

serissolutions, you should post links to these on that thread. It definitely has relevance since you were hired to take these. BTW, congrats on that.

I agree with everyone else on this. The glare is a problem, also the black background is slightly boring. If models are too expensive, maybe you could just pay a little girl a couple bucks or something. Maybe someone you know could model them for a small fee. The jewlry I think would interest younger age groups, so I'd probably use a child for a model. The model doesn't have to be professional, I've seen great pictures taken of little 4 yr olds modeling, or even adults pulled off the side of the street for a moment or two. I myself have pulled a few people off the streets, and given them 20 bucks to let me take a few shots of them. Came out quite nicely. If I were you I'd give it a try. See what you can do.

Would a polarizer reduce the glare?
