View Full Version : Reversing rings-please help me find them!

I've heard everyone talk about reversing rings as a cheap alternative for macro, and, while I know there are higher quality solutions, I'm curious to use one.
But I can't seem to find the proper word combinations over on B+H to even purchase one! Could someone let me know which words to use (or even a link) so that I can reverse the 18-55? Thanks!

But I can't seem to find the proper word combinations . . .
My English teacher would be crushed to hear that . . . ;{)#
Try "macro coupler". These will allow you to mount a reversed lens in front of a normally-mounted lens where it will function as a high-quality close-up lens. A straight lens reversing ring (allowing you to mount a reversed lens directly to the body) for the EOS system would not let you control your aperture, since that's handled strictly through bits flowing through the lens' electrical contacts. For that reason they're extremely scarce and extremely expensive. Searching on "Reverse lens adapter" at B&H brings up the Novoflex one for a mere $349.95.

Jon's right.
A search for "macro coupler" on the B&H website brings up this:

They all cost $7.95 ... MUCH more affordable than a Reverse lens adapter

Thanks for the help, all. It's on the way!
(along with a 1.4 extender...I didn't want the coupler to get lonely!)

I used two filter adaptors for Cokin filter holders glued together back to back when I used FD lenses...

There don't even seem to be many reversing rings on epay these days :(.
I've been looking round for a cheap 58mm one to use on most EOS zoom lenses. The 18-55 gives ***SERIOUS *** magnification when reversed -nearly equivilant to the specialist MP-E 65 1x to 5x macro lens!
I've never tried much the idea of using a reversed lens on a normal lens.Too strange for my liking

Why? It's just a highly-corrected close-up lens when used that way.

A DIY version was recently mention in the "Spring time macro" thread with a link to http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=007m6Z
Well, I'm curious to see what happens when I get the macro coupler in the next couple of days. I'll be connecting the 50mm 1.8 to the 18-55. Now, can anyone tell me what to expect...for instance, what would be the difference between doing what I'm doing vs. a dedicated reversing ring which would be put on without the 50mm in it's way?

Thats exactly what I'm thinking of doing too. I'd appreciate it if you could post some pictures once you get them.

You can use a lens reversed without having a reversing ring-just hold it against the camera by hand :)
Usefull for comparison tests
One trick when using EF lenses unconnected (i.e reversed with a cheap ring or normal direction with cheapo non electronic tubes) is to stop down the lens on the camera and removing it while holding the stop down button in.
It makes focussing more difficult but give the vital small apertures needed for depth of field

Putting the 18-55 on the camera and the 50 mm reversed onto the 18-55 will give you a +20 diopter close-up lens in front of your 18-55. It'll give you about life-size at 55 mm and about 1.36x at 18 mm. These are both when focussed at infinity. Focussing closer will give you a greater magnification.

I'm going to have to do some experimenting with the add-on lens idea :)

Please post some pictures when you get the ring. I'm curious as to how it will turn out since I'm thinking about doing this myself.

Hmmm,early tests suck big time.
Using the ef 50/1.8 II on the 18-55 gives huge vignetting.Interestingly it gave better results when the 50mm lens was used right way round but still vignetted at anything under 40mm.Other lens combo's didn't work any better....
Obviously more testing is needed but it's not looking prommising at all!
