20D image question

I just got my 20D today and was playing around with it. I had the drebel before. I was checking out the size of the images in photoshop and noticed the resolution was only 72 where with my rebel it is 180. Pics where taking on high jpeg. I would think the 20d would have higher resolution then the rebel. I was wondering if someone could explain this to me. Thanks in advance

The number's meaningless. The absolute pixel count is what matters. All the "72" or "180" means is that the default output device should use 72 dpi or 180 dpi to display it. Most applications don't pay any attention to it. If you were to display the 20D picture at 72 dpi, it'd be about 2-1/2 x 4 ft. That's all.

Actually, the 20D does, in fact, have a higher resolution than the Digital Rebel.

As was noted, don't get confused by the 72 or 180 dpi numbers that get stuck in there by the camera. Those are fairly arbitrary number, and you can change them with any good photo editor. As an example, if you only publish images on the web, then you might want to convert them all to 72. If you only do very high quality inkjet prints, then you might want to convert them all to 300.

For years, I have used a different photo editor that does not require me to use any 72 or 300 number in there at all. I can print perfect prints to the paper size I set. In other words, it throws the entire resolution at the printer without me deciding anything. That works for me.
