View Full Version : Thoughts on an improvement for the D60

I was just reading another on-line site and a thought crossed my mind and was wondering what others thought of it. (I considering puting this in Thoughts forum, but it applies to SLR cameras only).

I am not sure it would be possible, but for the higher end cameras, why could they not put a smaller sensor designed in the camera (along with the main one) to allow you to use the LCD display to aim and focus.

I believe this would be possible, by reflecting the light via the mirror into this second sensor. The second sensor would only have to have enough resolution for the LCD (like maybe a 240x320 pixel array). The camera would need a switching capability to display both the live feed and the review of a just shot image. It would have to make the proper corrections that will occur in the final shot as far as white balance goes. You should also be able to still look directly through the viewfinder.

The advantage of this would mean, I am no longer chained to the eye piece. Easier on my knees during portrait shots, makes it possible to hold the camera away from me and still see what I am going to shoot. In short a nifty capability which would allow for some pictures I might otherwise not get.

I do not believe it would add significantly to the cost, but would take some work with the design.

Being able to see what I am shooting, before I take the image, on the LCD is the only thing that I miss from my point and shoot that I wish was on the D60. That said, I still prefer the overall ability of my D60 to my Kodak DC4800. Not just the pixels, but the interchangeable better quality lenses, more consistant white balance, better autofocus.

On a last thought, I considering deleting this with out posting, becauseat the end of typing this I just had to reconsider if an SLR would even be needed anymore if I had the good quality interchangeable lenses on a point and shoot camera, but maybe it is just me, but my brain stills thinks that an SLR would give me higher quality then a non-SLR camera, by its nature.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

I will be traveling and unless I remember to check tonight at home, I will not see/send any replies until next year, so Happy Holidays from Virginia, USA.

Just give me the D60 sensor in an EOS-3 body. I get great prints to 13x19 using Fred Miranda's Step Interpolation and his sharpening action. Like 1.6x multiplier and have plenty of pixels at 6 megapixels. Just need real autofocus and exposure control.
