In my opinion, only #3 has an appropriate depth of field. Both 1 and 2 have inadequate depth of field and what there is is positioned badly.

I think #2 should have the foreground more in focus, even though the center of interest is the slices of salmon. I also like the fact that the elements are scattered over the whole picture, whereas in #1 they are too much in a column from top to bottom.

Dear Bob, thank you for your honest coments.

I agree number 1 is almost like a column
for number 2 I think I have one which has the caviar in focus, let me dig it out tonight and post it.

Cheers

Marco, I just wanted to say... I have no intrest in food photography but I have seen a lot of your shot's and I enjoy everyone of them. If I ever take up food photography i can only hope they will be as appealing as your shot's. You make everything look delicious.

I look forward to Whatever is on the menu next...

I would've rubbed some olive oil on that large piece of salmon and maybe sprayed some water on the parsley and caviar to give it a bit fresher look and make it pop. I'm ok with the compositions but agree with Bob regarding the choice of focus point and DoF.

The new lighting gear makes a huge difference over the bare flashes you were using previously. Good investment!

Im not an expert at all in this kind of stuff..but from an amateur point of view...

I like #1 in that it has a more simple line of structure...and pin points the cavier as being the main subject of that shot. If that was the case I think removing the spoon or maybe even having a scoop of cavier on the spoon to bring more attention to it..might work good.

I like #2 except for the glob of white stuff at the front of the photo. My eyes keep getting drawn to it. I would think taking that blob of white stuff and moving it to the back..and having the chives more in that place would work better. I would also remove what ever is in the background of that shot too.

I'm not sure what to think of #3
Are your hands washed??
heh

good job though.
