Hey all,

Will you help me decide something? I've been shooting people (neighbors, co-workers, friends-- at no charge) with a 20D using the kit lens and a 70-300mm Quantary lens. People have been coming to a modest studio I've placed in my home. I'd like to do some outside shooting and some other interior shooting away from my studio but don't have an external flash.

If I ask for a lens for my birthday for portrait work what would be a good one at a modest price?

If I ask for a flash 420ex would I eventually have to upgrade to a 580ex? What advantages does a 580 have over a 420?

Thanks in advance for all the great advice.

What is the budget?

Cannot go wrong with the 50mm 1.8 or 1.4. Or if you want a double duty lens the Tamaron 90mm Macro. I know you said "moderate" but I don't know the meaning when it comes to camera gear...just ask my wife...;)

There are a few threads that might help you decide. If you post your budget people will be able to give you a few more specific suggestions.

I have both the above mentioned lens and find them quite adequate for portraits. Use the 50mm for head and shoulders and the sp90mm for more body shots.
