Hi! I just joined because I think this could be the place to solve my doubts...
I'm Italian and I've just started a blog on English football - I plan to turn it into a proper news website in a few months and eventually turning it into my job...so now I'm in the planning phase and one of the angles I have to look at is obviously pictures. Is there any chance for someone like me to get a cheap-ish subscription for the right to use copyrighted Premier League pictures? I'm talking very low budget here, no income on the horizon for a good few months...
Getty obviously have an amazing service but they only charge per picture and that makes it way too dear! You know I would probably need to use at least 3 of 4 pictures a day...but thy wouldn't necessarily need to be the most recent ones, you know?
Anyone has advice on this?
Thanks a lot!!

I believe (but I'm not sure) that you would have to have a Premier League license to display images on an editorial website (such as a blog).

Before going off and buying photos, and then finding you need the license, I would do some research.

There is some info HERE (http://www.paphotos.com/info/football_dataco_limited_licence_restrictions_3/) and Football DataCo HERE (http://www.football-dataco.com/index.htm)...I believe for a license for displaying photos would cost approx £1000.00 for a season.

However, if you do get the end user license, then there are a number of agencies who sell images to people that might be a bit cheaper than getty.

James, thanks a lot for your reply. I did some research and yes, you do need a PL licence, although it's about 500 pounds plus vat per season, so it's kindof affordable...
Would you know any of those agencies you mentioned - that take and sell Premier League pictures but are not as expensive as Getty et al? Or any idea where I could find a list of PL-licenced agency.

Thanks a million

It might be an idea to speak to Derek Johnston at DataCo when/if you buy a license. I'm sure he'd be able to tell you who would be able to sell you images...of course, I'm not sure who'd be able to offer you the best price...that's a matter for you to research i guess.

James,
Actually I got the licence info by emailing dataco, and I got replies from this Kelly Williams who I saw was putting Derek Johnston in copy. So I guess I reached the right people...but her answer on agencies was that "they were unable to provide me with a list of licenced agencies"...what do you think?

Thank you
Giovanni

I believe that is the end-user license. ie. If a website or newspaper wishes to publish match reports, photographs and fixtures, they require an end-user license. A few years ago they introduced some "new media" licenses for blogs and web-based media, and in response to the issues surrounding fan sites publishing fixture lists.

Just be thankful we photographers dont have to pay for our licenses!
