I mainly shoot amateur sports and I usually always shoot large JPEG as my poor 10D buffer chokes when shooting RAW. The few times I shoot RAW is for family pics etc., so I'm pretty inexperienced with it.

One thing that's always puzzled me is where's the JPEG hiding when I set my 10D up to shoot RAW and LJPEG? When I open the file all I ever see is the CRW and THM files.

So where the devil is that LJPEG file?

The JPEG file is embedded in the RAW file. You can use one of Canon's viewer programs, like the FileViewer Utility (FVU) to extract it and save it to a separate file.

the THM file is a really small jpeg. Is that what you mean? slin100 is correct about extracting, however is PSCS, the jpeg file is show separate w/o extraction when shooting raw+jpeg.

Dante - the 10D is different than the 20D. I have a 10D, never used a 20D, but as far as I know the 20D can save a CR2 and JPG file separately. On the 10D, you only get a CRW file, which contains the RAW data as well as a JPEG image.

In Canon File Viewer Utility or EOS Viewer Utility, you get extract the JPEG image into a separate file by first selecting the images you want to extract it from, then choose File / Extract and Save in File.

Breezebrowser is an excellent raw converting tool with the option to extract embedded jpeg,s as well .

I can confirm that on the 20D it saves two files, a .cr2 and a .jpg.

I can confirm that on the 20D it saves two files, a .cr2 and a .jpg.

I can also confirm that the 10D allows one to configure the size of the jpeg imbedded within the RAW data per Cnf 8.

RAW is RAW regardless of "jpeg size". The very fact that this is a function on the 10D means there must be an ability to extract this file from the crw file.

It also makes sense why 10D and 20D formats are different...one has an imbedded jpeg in it!

I can confirm that on the 20D it saves two files, a .cr2 and a .jpg.

If you tell it to. And if you choose no JPEG there is STILL a JPEG embedded in the raw file!

THM has nothing to do with the embedded jpeg.. however it seems to be a misconnection that persists...

As mentioned,. use Zoombrowser, Fileviewer utilit, Eos Viewer utility, DPP, or the third party "BreezeBrowser to extract the embedded jppeg from the Canon .CRW files.
