Just got a remote cable for my 300D , camera still moves when shutter released by hand on tripod , i thought the switch would do the same as the shutter button but focus lock and shutter release seem to be at the same time ! Is there a knack to using the switch ?

It's the same as the shutter - half press for focus, full press to take the photo.

Just out of interest - how is a remote cable used when the focus is moved to the back button using the custom functions? Is it possible?

Ben - doubt it would work very well.

Marshy - if it doesn't work well with a half press then a full press it could be that it's faulty. Call the place you bought it from and talk to them. I got a cheap one off ebay and it works fine.

if you have the focus set to the * button then you don't need to focus with the remote as you wouldn't need to focus with the shutter release button on the camera.

One thing you wanna make sure is that your remote is plugged all the way in. When it's not, sometimes it'll trigger the shutter but the focus gets all screwed up (as in, it sometimes will, sometimes won't).
