Hi,
I am occasionally having trouble focusing my G9. Usually it seems to be either in low light and/or when I am close to or zoomed in close to my subject. Any suggestions would be quite helpful.
Thanks!

If you are having trouble focusing on a near subject, switch it to macro mode; you don't need to be on top of something to use the macro mode. But, you can't get a good focus by zooming in manual mode. Don't ask me how I know. :-) Also, try the manual focus feature too.

Here's a link to my own learning experiences with G9 focusing

Well, when it's dark, you're going to be using flash because high iso shots are just dreadful on the g series still in my experience. Like picbug said, switch to macro for close shots.

The G series uses contrast detect focusing on vertical lines. You need something that has a vertical line in it for the camera to focus. You've probably noticed that shooting a scene that is a monotone or lacks contrast doesn't work well.

A trick that I learned early on is if you're shooting a landscape shot of the horizon and your camera won't focus, then turn the camera 90 degrees so that the horizon line is in the focusing zone. Press the shutter half way to lock focus, keep holding the shutter and turn the camera back to landscape and snap away!
