I hope this isn't really old news; I had a search for "Deep Zoom Composer" but it didn't get any hits.

Okay, Microsoft has a Flash competitor called Silverlight. One of thepre-canned tools is Deep Zoom Composer, which allows you to do the kind of thing I have on this website:

You have to drag the pictures around with your mouse, and use the wheel to zoom in and out. You may also find you are prompted to install the Microsoft Silverlight runtime if you don't already have it.

The set here has over 1000 images on it. Each is 500 pixels on the long side. Yet you can zoom it to pretty much full screen (depending on the size of your monitor) and it looks... tolerable. It's pretty fast, too. I'd have to say that I'm pretty impressed. (Please note that my particular picture set has some areas where it is far less than perfect, I'm working on that).

What does everyone think?

Yeah, deep zoom is pretty cool. It's been around for awhile, and I didn't realize that they were putting it into Silverlight. There is also a similar tech called Photosynth where you can upload multiple 2d images from a scene and it will create a virtual 3D collage of images. There was a thread about it on here awhile back.
