Lost with my PW and 580ex...

I normally use my ABs with a sync cord. I recently purchased one PW Plus II and a 580ex. I put the PW to my camera and the 580ex on a stand 5ft or so away. I put the PW on both and channel 1. I put the 580ex on ETTL, master, channel 1. I turned both on and tried to get the 580ex to fire. I also tried putting the 580ex on slave.

I'm lost.

What am I doing wrong?

I know this is a ridiculously basic question and I'm probably overlooking something very simple.

You need a SET of pocketwizards. The pocketwizard plus II transceiver acts as a receiver and a transmitter. The 580EXII is not compatible with the pocketwizard alone. You need to buy another pocket wizard transceiver to hook up to the 580EXII to allow off camera triggering to work.
