580 EX II Standby timer

I have the 580 ex II and the Cybersync radio trigger. It works great. The only thing that doesn't work so great is the speedlite going into standby mode. I lost the book on the 580; I'm sure there is a way to change the length of time before it hibernates.

I would appreciate any help.

Set Custom Function 01 to 1 - Disable Auto Power.

If the 40D Flash Control Menu item gives access to the Flash's Custom Functions, use that to set.

Thanks for the response. I don't know how to set the Custom Function on the speedlite. When I hit the Light/C.Fn button the light toggles on and off. There is a menu for controlling the external flash, however, it doesn't work for off camera flash. At least that I know of. Any further tips would be appreciated.

Sorry, meant to add that - hold that Light/C.Fn button down until a C.Fn symbol appears in the bottom left of the display.

Turn the large dial until the required function is displayed. Press the Set button in the middle, dial to the value, press Set again.

Or, put the flash on the camera to set the menu. The menu wording fully details the functions and their setting values.

What you need to do is mount the flash in the camera hotshoe, then set the custom function. You can then take it off camera. Setting the custom function via the camera makes it very easy because the menu will tell you exactly what function you are setting without needing to guess or having had it memorized. :)

Kewl...I suppose this works for the 580ex I too? I'm sitting here right now and looking at my 430EX I also, and it has a C.Fn button too...boy I hope I can disable sleep on it too!

Yes, you can set the custom function on the 580EX to not go to sleep but it's not with the same custom function number. On the 580EX, sleep mode is turned off with C.Fn-14 set to 1. On the 430EX, it's C.Fn-01.
