View Full Version : Is the an easier way to select a zone on my PW multimax w/ Sekonic L-758DR?

So I own the Sekonic L-758DR, and I got my first PW multimax in hopes of using the different zones (a,b,c&d) on each different light, to then more easily meter each light. Is there any easy way to pick which zone (letter) you want to meter? Do I really have to go into the menu by holding the "mode" button down while turning the jog wheel and select/de-select each letter, EVERY time?!
There's gotta be an easier way....what am I missing?
Also, as a sidenote, does anyone know if you can still send in older multimaxes (those lacking the USB port) to get the firmware updated? Is there a cost for this? I'm not sure if I'm missing out on much...but mine has version 3.27, which is pretty darn old according to the PW website.

All you should need to do is to press the different buttons to select/deselect the different zones. ISO1 is for zone A, ISO 2 for B, Mid.Tone for C and M.Clear for D.

Send PocketWizard an email asking if they can update your PW MM to a later version. I have one unit which is at v 4.03 and when I asked them about updating it to a later version, they informed me that mine could not be updated to anything newer than what I already had.

Thanks for your reply.
Do you mean when you're setting up which channel on the sekonic? Yes, I can get that to work....and say I've got 4 lights with 4 multimaxes...each to a different letter. So I set up the channel (say channel 17) with all four letters selected as active. Is there a way I can just hit Iso 1 and it'll then fire just the multimax assigned to A, or hit the mid-tone button and have just the multimax set up for the C zone.
I guess I'm just surprised there isn't an easier way to meter only one light at a time, without having to go into the menu in between metering light A, and light C to de-select A and activate C. Does that make sense?

If you want to meter the light on zone A, all you need to do is press the ISO 1 button and then press the "measure" button. There's no need to go into the menu first.

I must be doing something wrong. Right now the sekonic is on channel 17 with a, b & c all enabled. Multimax is set to channel 17, group A.
Everytime I press the "measure" button I get confirmation on the multimax....whether I press ISO 1/2 beforehand or not. However, there's no way I can press measure without the multimax receiving it, aside from holding the ISO 1/2 button and pressing the measure button....but then nothing is fired (including the multimax set to A, when holding ISO1). This means that I'm somehow not choosing the group by pressing the ISO button, as it seems to make no difference.
any idea what I'm doing wrong or what I'm missing?
Thanks again for your help thusfar.

My sincerest apology. I misspoke in my earlier posts. I could have sworn that I was able to change the zones by just pressing the corresponding buttons but when I just tried it on my meter, I couldn't. I had to press the mode button first and joggle back to get the zone screen on the LCD screen first. I guess it got to be so automatic for me that I didn't realize that it was a multistep process to change the zones. Sorry for the misinformation. :o

haha...no problem. I thought I was going crazy for a second there.
well that's too bad. Do you find that you usually just fire all strobes at the same time but just aim your light meter at each particular light....or do you end up selecting/de-selecting for each light as you go through them so that only one llight is firing at a time?

I actually do fire each light individually and I never found it "inconvenient" to switch the zones on the meter. Have you ever called somebody by automatically punching a sequence of numbers on the phone pad but if someone asks you what number you just dialed you have to think about it and maybe go through the motion of punching the number pads slowly just to figure out what the phone number is? Well, that's how it is when I switch channels on the meter.

hopefully it'll get a little quicker and more intuitive for me as well!
thanks for your help.
