Hello,
I am a new G10 owner and I think I may have wrecked my camera . Is this sun damage to the ccd? (the dark circle the rest is grease on a hanger door) I took a photo of the sunrise this morning. I live in Yellowknife Canada about 62deg N latitude so I find it hard to believe the sun has that much intensity?
any ideas? the camera is not yet 24hrs old:(

Here is the image I took.

I'd say you have a significant dust bunny...

The dark spot in image #1 is nowhere near where the sun was in image #2.

thanks for the quick reply, is it possible that it happened when I focused the shot? notice the spot is actually in the sunrise shot?

Your f/stop will dictate how noticeable is a dust bunny. Smaller apertures will make dust show more than shooting wide open.

wow less than 24 hrs and dust already!

My 30D DSLR was full of dust brand new out of a sealed box

Although I dont know how you would clean the G10 unless its on the Lens itself, which for some reason mine seems to get dirty pretty quickly

Thanks Sonic, I took it back and got a new one!

It is dust. Probably from assembly. You would think that Canon could afford a clean room or two for Camera assembly.

Thats a bummer too because unlike *Sonic*'s 30D, you will have to send it to Canon to have it cleaned.

Send the camera back for an exchange - this should not happen. You paid for a perfectly fine G10 and the dust degrades the camera significantly. You could also send it in to Canon for a free repair, but given that it's only 24 hours old - you should exchange it.

In order to burn your sensor you would have to hold it fully exposed towards the core of the sun for at least an hour.

Since it's a g10 there's no way to do that...thus...it's just dust.

kajuah, I have wondered about the possibility of sunburning a sensor, Not that I doubt you, but where or what do you base the 1 hour of exposure for damage idea on? thankfully it cannot easily be done or I would have discovered it by now. Just curious.

Just a hyperbole of something I was told when they explained to me how sensor damage occurs and why you shouldn't shoot at the sun directly. Not sure on its validity in all honesty, could try googling it.

I'm starting to think that CANON's QC isn't as good as it once was.

A friend of mine has had issues with two of her three lenses on her XTI. Out of the box it had slight crack in one lens and a bubble in another.

I'm happy I"m shooting NIKON for my DSLR. I'm happy with my G10..thus far it has behaved. (Crossing my fingers)
