View Full Version : Adding a BX400 to two D-Lite 4's - consistent results? Or get a 3rd D-Lite instead?

Trying to complete the studio setup (using my 580EX is no longer practical for a third light). Right now I have two (2) Elinchrom D-Lite 4's.

Now that I have a 5' Octa (Photoflex) and some other larger modifiers I'm looking at the 400BX and liking its superior build quality.

My question is: Will using a 400BX produce undesireable color temperature changes compared to a three (3) D-Lite setup? Would three D-lites yield a more consistent color temperature with minimal variation versus D-Lites and a 400BX?

Robert, I know you switched from D-Lites to 400BX's completely but I'm hoping you may know a little about such a mixed strobe configuration.

You will see no difference in colour balance.
I currently use 3 x D-lite 200's along with a BX400 and BXRi250.
The only problems you may experience is the different output with the modeling lamps.

I understand from one of Roberts earlier posts that the D-lites modeling lamp is actually brighter than the BX modeling lamp.
However, with the BX range you do have the ability to set the modeling lamp totally independent from the strobe output.

Hi Steve,

Unless you've experienced problems with your D-Lite's or are unhappy wth them then I would just get another D-Lite. Mixing strobes within one brand is ok and you shouldn't experience any shifts in color temperature.

If build quality is an issue or you feel a D-Lite is not the best addition to your kit then you may consider getting a 400BX, new or used but I don't see a reason to do so unless you're finding the D-Lite to be deficient.

Just so you know, I didn't upgrade from D-Lites to BX's because of performance issues. The D-Lite's are just about as rock solid in performance as the BX's. That's one thing that is very consistent up and down the Elinchrom product line.

Rob I think he is talking about getting a Elinchrom 400BX not an AB

Yeah, I was groggy when I replied. I caught that. I'll edit my post.
