To the new Sigma 24-70 HSM, if its optically the same or better, and as quick focusing as the 24-70L.
Will Canon make a 24-75L, 24-70L IS, or 24-70 f2, or a new Firmware that won't work the the Sigma:confused:?

If you look at canonrumors.com, the 24-70 IS is going to come. This going to be a killer. How much would it cost?

I think if anything Canon will make the 24-70mm IS. Firmware would be interesting, but I doubt that they will make firmwares for older bodies like the D30 or 1D classic.

I think that the next xxD is going to have a new focus system and I predict its going to break a lot of the Sigmas..
Anyways as they said, I predict Canon is going to make a 24-70 IS, but it will be a bit more expensive, most likely in the $1500-1600 range...maybe $1700-1800
And if you think thats expensive, keep in mind Sony charges $1750 for their 24-70 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar and Nikon charges $1700 for theirs, the fact the Sigma is $900 and everyone is calling it expensive is merely because Canon's 24-70L is the cheapest of the three by a fairly big margin and I think the pricing on it was more to go after Sony and Nikon customers than Canon... (Canon's is $1100 or so IIRC)

Rather pay the extra £200 and have the canon one.

canon seems to be making cameras that are an attempt to outresolve all 3rd party lenses... :D

..and it's only $200 more (new) for a more reliable and better-built zoom with a superior hood system. Canon doesn't need to do anything.

Sony charges that just because it says Zeiss, like hasselblad. Zeiss is not what they used to be so it should just be Carl and not Carl Zeiss.
Nikon is just doing now what Canon has been doing for years because Canon has been beating them for years.

I posted elsewhere, that although I seriously doubt this lens is soon to happen, if it did, I figured it would be priced at $2,090.00.
My "logic" (ie pure WAG) was this:
$1,190 > current price at B&H for 24-70
$500 > cost for addition of IS (cost diff of IS on the 70-200 f/4's)
$200 > for new SWC lens coatings (ala 24L II)
$200 > and this is for no reason other than they can (200L f/2 logic)
-------
$2,090 > they may even toss a bit more in for yen/dollar adjustment as they have a clean slate.
I'm hoping it does appear, and my guesstimate is way high, but time will tell.

I can't believe Sigma missed the boat, and the market, when they should have introduced their IS on this new lens. What a missed opportunity. I don't see anything that would make me want to buy the Sigma.

That is a very interesting one, I had a look and it made me laugh. :D
If you check the price on the Polish website (just click Buy in polish :D), you'll find that the price is approximately 3100 euros, converted from zloty, for the 5D II and 24-70 IS kit. The 5D II generally sells for 2499 euros around these parts, so that would be a stunningly good price, especially considering that the non-IS version sells for approx. 1000 euros around here.
I was told by one of my suppliers on Friday that there was a new 5D II kit, probably with the 24-70 F/2.8L. So I decided to check Foto Konijnenberg, and guess what? They have the 5D II at 2449 currently, and a kit with the 24-70L, not currently in stock BTW, for 3299:
http://www.foto-konijnenberg.nl/product/1372053/canon_eos_5d_mark_ii_serie.html
That's reasonable, and a nice discount, on a 5D II with 24-70L, but they don't list it as a 24-70 L IS, and neither do I believe that there will be one for that price. It would be at least double that price difference, just for the lens alone, I am sure :D.
I guess there was a mix-up on that Polish site :D.
Kind regards, Wim

From what I've heard its still not a slouch of a lens, neither of them is optically a bad optic, possibly a tidge better than the Canon to take advantage of newer coatings and such versus the Canon design which is approaching what? 10 years now?
And Nikon copied Canon's lens hood idea (sorta, their older 28-80 f/2.8 had something like it as well) which I wonder why the hell hasnt been ripped off by more people because its singly the most ingenious lens hood ever....

Probably near the price of the 70-200 2.8 IS. It covers a very useful range on 1.3 and full frame, so the demand should be there for many.
