I took this shot with my 100-400 IS L at 400mm,and set the lens on the 1.6m(i have not croped this shot).

Alan, I would do a vertical crop, closing in on subject which I would position off-center (rule of thirds). Love yellow against green but darker portion of pic is distractive to my eye. How would this be different to your personal treatment when cropping? Wondrous what simple beauty is out there.

PS, how do you like your 100-400L IS lens and why did you choose to use telephoto for this shot? Good sharpness. Any PS alterations?
