He has the Canon EF 300/f4L lens (300mm focal length/f4 max aperture ... L=luxury (Canon's best)) and he used it in conjunction with a 1.4x tele-converter (attached between the body and lens, it multiplies the focal length by 1.4 (300 x 1.4 = 420)).

Nice shot, gyrob!

Unfortunately I think the pilot was blinking. :) Great capture.

Nice capture. Pretty sharp for a jet pic!

WOW. Most certainly nothing to be embarrassed about. Photographing commercial aircraft can be awkward - but jets are a much more difficult task. They are only a fraction of the size, moving much faster, and generally require larger zoom value's to fill the frame - which exaserbates the shake factor.

Very nice shot.

I have RAF Jaguar comming to the states on 4/3/05. Suppose to arrive at Washington Dulles around noon. Gonna try to get some close up pics of it..... Calling for rain though:evil:

Nice shot.

I'm afraid that if I pointed a big lens like that at a military plane the pilot might mistake it for a shoulder launcher, and fire a missile at me.

Was that hand-held, or tripod? If tripod, what setup lets you pivot the lens fast enough to track the jet?

Nice shot, or did I say that already

David

opps the lens is the 300mm IS plus 1.4 plus 1.6 factor = 672mm hand held at 640sec f5.6 200iso the trick is to manul focus untill its really close or the lens will hunt and the planes gone, its tiny in the viewfinder as i start to track hence manul focus Then let auto take over .

2000 sec 7.1 iso 400 this almost filled the frame, i found this funny as the guy in the back started to hang on :) again manul focus untill it got closer then auto .
thanks for replys
Rob.

Great shots!!
Is that first one a Phantom?

Lovely and sharp, your technique works well.

no a Tornado, Phantom's have long gone :( yes the technique does seem to be the way to do it these planes are doing around 250/300mph as they make there run and trying autofocus when they are a dot in the viewfinder is almost hopeless .its a great place to see planes but often you are just waiting around till they come scanners are handy as you can get a little warning that ones on the way........ so they say ;)
