Looking into the purchase of ND filters - is there any advantage or disadvantage between using circular screw on filters or 100mm square which fit into a Lee holder.

I assume you mean Graduated Neutral Density filters, not regular Neutral Density.
The advantage is that with the holders, you can place the horizon line anywhere you want it, instead of being force to have it dead center in the frame.
Here is a great thread on GND's.

With the square filters you can compose, focus etc. and THEN slide the filter into place. Compose and focus with a 10 stop ND is quite difficult to say the least. But be prepared to mod (read: lots and lots of gaffer tape) your filter holder for use with ND filters. You don't want any light reaching the lens "around" the filters.

I have the round ones and I like them pretty well
I do see the advantage of the cokin style and will probably pick up some sooner than later.

Thanks for your comments - seams that screw on circular filters may be the best option.
