circular polarizer

How do you work a circular polarizer? New to this type filter. Would it be advisable on a 400mm f5.6 lens? Thanks,

Hey Paul, a circular polarizer is great if you use it at the right time. First off you mainly want to use it for a couple of things. - to darken a blue sky and saturate colors, or to remove reflection. The way you make it work is by rotating the filter untill you see a change through the viewfinder. The most profound change will be when you are at a right angle to the sun. what I always do is make a reverse L with my pointer finger and thumb on my right hand, point at the sun then shoot in the direction of my thumb, no matter which way you rotate your thumb. Play around with that and see what kind of results you get. its best not to shoot at high noon.
