New SX10 IS... First Photo's

I just bought a SX10 IS last week and I am loving it. I feel like I have got a propper camera now. The last one I got was 5 years ago and it was a basic point and shoot. I attached some pics that I have take, so dont be to hard on me.:)
I only resized them down and noticed a reduction in quality. No other editing (I dont know any of the programs to use.)

My belief is that like DSLR's in RAW mode, point-and-shoot (P & S) cameras often also need some sharpening added via editing software:

(I'll remove this if you want as I don't want to seem like I'm stealing photos.)

You can use GIMP http://www.gimp.org/ freeware to edit photos with, but there is a learning curve. You might also look into noise software like Neat Image or Noiseware which have freeware versions that really help with high ISO noise reduction.

I have many more experimental photos to try before I take this camera to NYC next month.

See how it says "IMAGE EDITING OK" below a lot of people's avatars? That's a way of saying you can edit my photos and re-post them to show me something. You can go into your forum settings and turn on the "IMAGE EDITING OK" thing if you want it to show up under your avatar. That lets people know that you don't mind them "borrowing" your photos to show you how to do stuff.

Hi all...I think this is my first post:p But I've been reading since I got my SX10IS (which I love) and joined this forum shortly after at the end of Jan.

Anyway, I have a question (or two). In what I quoted, "originalstarlite" says he made "custom color, sharpness +1" his default. I looked at my menu and I can only assume (unless I'm missing something) that he means he set his "contrast" up a notch (I did not see "sharpness" anywhere). IS there a "sharpness" setting? Did I just miss it?

Also, what is the difference (if it can be explained in plain English) between increasing contrast (if that is what he did) and setting the camera to "vivid"? And while I'm at it, I'm stumped as to what "positive film" actually does. I can only think of 35mm slides as a "positive film", but don't understand what it really means to us, the users - how it effects the image.

Canon certainly did not make this setting obvious. Unlike other simple adjustments, this one is buried deep in the sub menus. Go to pages 142-143 of the manual, and the "custom color" selection process is presented. Once you add the +1 to sharpness, anytime you shoot in "custom color" that effect will transpire.

Thanks, found it....didn't notice the "up/down" arrows before...just saw the default "contrast". Not sure what the difference is between contrast and sharpness though :confused: - For that matter I'm still not sure what "vivid" and "positive film" mean to us.

Now that I've set the custom color to "sharpness" (+1), that only is in effect when I use "custom color"? In other words, If I choose "normal" than it's not in effect? Or "vivid" or any of the other "my colors" settings (like "off") then the sharpness effect is off?

Contrast is changing what's captured from light grey/dark grey to white/black. Sharpness is how suddenly it changes from light grey to dark grey (or white to black).

Yes, that setting will only work on Custom Colour. For whoever else may be reading - the setting's in Custom Color on other PowerShots as well.

I've only played with this cam at work, but it seems pretty sweet. Feels to me like Canon's taken their point and shoots to the next level!

I just got one. Have been amazed at image host collections for that camera.

A Boxer - cool. Our oldest son has one.

Just barely experimenting, all I can say is that it is so smooth and comfortable, it was as if it melted into my hands.

I've been using an S1 IS for years. Now it's our younger son's first digital.
