Evening light . . . soft warm glow, Sandhill Cranes numbering XX or more work through the stubble left unturned from the fall. Beautiful to see, beautiful to hear. The croaks call the jumping the playing, the courting.
20D/100-400 Raw
Some were banded . . .bob, lol.

Hi Skip . . . yes this is #2 for my Raw project . . . the file is so big though that the compressed version is very pale . . . lost the contrast in the post here. I suppose I will have to work on that problem on the morrow however, night time for me.

Well Dave I guess . . . I think I am screwing up the pictures . . . having only done two thus far. And my PS skills are not the good anyway. But Looks like a place to start and what the heck, I can only get better, lol.
I like the 16 bit thing . . . that has power. I think I will stay this way till I get better or give up. I guess this and the over exposed Pintails will be my marker. You use Raw Dave? I guess from your comment that you do. Care to expound some on it.

what is the basic difference for RAW

Yes I have been using Raw for a while now. I tried to go back to jpeg but found I didn't like it at all. Correct me if I'm wrong but the camera dosen't apply anything to the photo in the Raw format. So you have to use USM a little more than you would if you shot in jepg. On this shot try a setting of; Amount 20%, Radius 50, Threshold 0. Do this a couple of times and see the differance. Also white balance and exposure corrections if any are a breeze. You can apply the amount of saturation you want. I find you usualy don't have to do much. Unless the shot got screwed up in the first place. But if it did you have a pretty good chance of saving it.

Beautiful shot. Wish I had that 100-400 some years back when I lived in N.Indiana. Just down the road from Michigan City, IN on HWY 421 is the Jasper Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area (http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/publications/scranes.htm) where over 10,000 of these beautiful birds stop during their migration. Awesome to see and hear.

Please read some of the many threads on RAW processing in the "Post Processing" forum, or ask your question in a new thread there. :)

Beautiful study in tan/beige. Really makes the red head pop out. I too am starting this "raw" thing. I do belive it has promise, if I have enough patience to learn.

Aren't these cranes a riot? We couldn't get close enough, but saw them landing in a field to roost by the thousands.
This learning new stuff keeps our brains from going stagnant (at least that's what I keep telling myself as I play with the raw files-LOL)

Great shot! I've never seen these guys before, but there are supposed to be quite a few close to me on Sauvie Island. You've given me inspiration to go seek them out... http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

HI Sandy . . . the mono tone just does not convey the 'feeling' but is most likely correct for the photograph. Nature does a good job, does she not, in hiding her beauty in camo of the time of year.

If you guys would like . . . I can post the raw file and everyone can have a shot at this one. We have done this before but I don't see why, if there is interest we can not just do it again. You never know more contrast might help, or perhaps it does get stripped out in the compression.
BTW I am glad the image size in under 100m 'cause if a post of mine don't look quite right up here . . . I can always fall back on the compression to save face. LOL.
You guys kill me.
